The Toronto Blue Jays started the offseason on a high note but ultimately fell short in landing several marquee free agents. Their most notable disappointment came when star outfielder Kyle Tucker chose to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers instead.

According to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, Tucker widely viewed as the top player available agreed to a four-year, $240 million deal with Los Angeles that includes opt-out clauses after the second and third seasons. The move followed the Dodgers’ earlier signing of star closer Edwin Diaz.
With Tucker off the board, Toronto may pivot to another option. FanSided’s Mark Powell predicts the Blue Jays could target veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos, who was recently released by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Powell suggests Toronto makes sense as a landing spot, particularly given its need for outfield help. The Blue Jays are expected to be without Anthony Santander for several months after he underwent shoulder surgery, creating an opportunity in the lineup.
Although Castellanos doesn’t match Tucker’s all-around impact, he could offer Toronto a seasoned presence in right field. After failing to find a trade partner, Philadelphia cut ties with him but remains responsible for the rest of his contract. Reports also indicated Castellanos was benched last season following an incident in which he brought beer into the dugout, a situation the team reportedly wanted resolved before the start of spring training.
While Castellanos has been criticized for his defensive limitations, his right-handed power bat and offensive production remain appealing. For a Blue Jays team seeking veteran leadership and postseason experience, he could represent a practical late-offseason addition capable of strengthening the lineup.
