Sunderland’s ambitious summer pursuit of Napoli’s midfield powerhouse, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, has been revealed to have fallen short — and Fabrizio Romano has now explained why. According to the respected transfer journalist, the Black Cats made a serious inquiry about the 64-cap Cameroon international during the final weeks of the window as they sought to add top-flight experience to their youthful squad. However, despite their interest, negotiations quickly stalled once Napoli made their position clear.
Romano reports that Napoli were unwilling to consider any offer for Anguissa, whom they regard as a vital part of their Serie A and Champions League campaigns. The Italian club viewed the midfielder as “untouchable” and rejected all approaches outright, including those from English clubs. Sunderland’s proposal, which reportedly involved an initial loan with an option to buy, did not meet Napoli’s valuation or the player’s expectations for his career at this stage.
Furthermore, Anguissa himself was not pushing for a move away from Naples, having only recently signed an improved deal with the club earlier this year. Romano noted that the player’s focus remains on helping Napoli challenge for major honours, while Sunderland are still in the process of rebuilding their squad to establish themselves in the Premier League. Although the deal collapsed, sources suggest Sunderland’s bold attempt underlines their growing ambition to attract elite talent in upcoming transfer windows.
