Breaking: A new prospect from the New York Rangers earned Third Star honors in his debut with the Hartford Wolf Pack.

A newly acquired prospect from the New York Rangers made an immediate impact in his debut with the Hartford Wolf Pack, earning Third Star honors after a strong performance against the Hershey Bears.

Forward Aidan Thompson recorded two assists in Hartford’s 5–2 victory Saturday night, quickly making his presence felt after joining the team in a minor-league trade with the Chicago Blackhawks just hours before the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday.

The 24-year-old began his day in San Diego skating with the Rockford IceHogs before receiving news that he had been traded to the Rangers organization. The sudden move forced him into a hectic cross-country trip to reach Hartford, leaving him little time to recover before Saturday’s game at PeoplesBank Arena.

Despite the demanding travel schedule, Thompson delivered a strong outing, assisting on both goals scored by teammate Carey Terrance.

“I’m really excited to be here,” Thompson said after the game. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start.”

The performance marked Thompson’s second multi-point game of his rookie professional season. Before the trade, he recorded 15 points—six goals and nine assists—in 40 games with Rockford.

Hartford head coach Grant Potulny praised the newcomer’s debut, highlighting his awareness, skating ability, and competitiveness with the puck.

Although listed at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, Thompson showed plenty of physical edge during the game. Along with setting up Terrance’s two goals one late in the first period and another early in the second—he also engaged physically during a contest that featured a total of 71 penalty minutes. Thompson picked up four of those minutes, including a slashing penalty and a coincidental roughing minor with Hershey defenseman Louie Belpedio.

Terrance praised Thompson’s aggressive style, noting that despite his smaller size, the forward isn’t afraid to battle along the boards or get involved physically.

Thompson joins the Rangers organization at a time when general manager Chris Drury is focusing on adding young players with upside as part of the team’s retooling strategy. The forward previously enjoyed strong success at the collegiate level with the Denver Pioneers men’s ice hockey, helping the team capture the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship in 2024. The following season, he posted an impressive 21 goals and 55 points in 44 games.

Originally selected by the Blackhawks in the third round (90th overall) of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Thompson struggled to find offensive consistency with Rockford this season. Chicago ultimately traded him to New York in exchange for veteran defenseman Derrick Pouliot.

Drury explained that the Rangers were willing to take a chance on a young player who has previously shown strong scoring potential. Based on Thompson’s impressive debut with Hartford, the early returns on that decision appear promising.
