The Auburn Tigers are entering a new chapter under head coach Alex Golesh, and an upcoming visit from a top quarterback prospect could be an early defining moment for his tenure.
Taking over for Hugh Freeze, Golesh inherits a program that struggled to find consistency on offense largely due to instability at quarterback. Improving that position will be central to his success, and he already has a short-term solution with Byrum Brown joining him after their previous success together. However, with Brown expected to be a one-year option, Auburn still needs a long-term answer under center.
That’s where elite recruit Will Mencl comes in. The five-star prospect is scheduled to visit Auburn, giving Golesh and his staff a prime opportunity to make a strong impression. Mencl is widely regarded as one of the top players in the 2027 class ranked among the best overall prospects, the No. 1 quarterback, and the top player out of Arizona.
Landing a talent of his caliber won’t be easy, though. Programs like the Oregon Ducks are viewed as leading contenders, meaning Auburn will have to stand out both on and off the field during his recruitment.
If Golesh can secure a commitment from Mencl, it would immediately elevate the program’s future outlook and signal a major recruiting win early in his tenure. More importantly, it would help lay the foundation for a more dynamic and reliable offense something Auburn has been missing in recent years.
Building depth and stability at quarterback is essential for sustained success, and adding a player like Mencl could mark the beginning of a new era for Auburn football.
