The Chicago Cubs are emerging as a serious contender to acquire a high-impact arm ahead of the MLB trade deadline, with reports linking them to a potential move for Freddy Peralta, a veteran right-hander currently with the New York Mets. As Chicago continues its strong push toward the postseason, adding a frontline starter has become a clear priority for a team already playing some of the best baseball in the league.
So far this season, the Cubs have looked every bit like a legitimate World Series threat. Their lineup has been productive, and their overall consistency has propelled them near the top of the standings. However, one lingering concern remains: the starting rotation lacks a true ace who can anchor the staff in high-stakes playoff matchups. Bringing in a pitcher of Peralta’s caliber could address that gap and elevate the team from contender to favorite.
According to MLB insider Robert Murray, Chicago is expected to be among several teams monitoring Peralta’s availability. The connection is particularly intriguing given Cubs manager Craig Counsell previously worked with Peralta during their time together in Milwaukee. That familiarity could play a role if trade discussions intensify.
That said, the situation remains fluid. The Mets, who acquired Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers in a bold offseason move, have not yet committed to selling. Their decision will likely depend on whether they can climb back into playoff contention before the deadline. If they do, Peralta may be off the table entirely. If not, he could quickly become one of the most sought-after pitchers on the market.
Murray described Peralta as a “prime trade chip,” noting both his on-field performance and his reputation within the clubhouse. Over the course of his career, Peralta has maintained a solid ERA and established himself as a reliable, high-end starter. With his contract set to expire after this season valued at around $8 million he represents a valuable short-term asset for contenders while also giving the Mets an opportunity to recoup value if their season slips away.
Interestingly, trading Peralta wouldn’t necessarily close the door on a future reunion with New York. There is precedent in MLB for players being dealt at the deadline and then re-signing with their original team in free agency, making such a move a strategic, rather than purely subtractive, decision.
On the field, Peralta has delivered respectable results this season, posting a 3.52 ERA through his first several starts. While not dominant, his consistency and experience make him an appealing option for teams seeking stability at the top of their rotation.
Meanwhile, the Cubs continue to surge. With a strong record and first place in their division, they’ve climbed near the top of league power rankings, trailing only elite teams like the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League. Their recent dominance at Wrigley Field including an extended home winning streak has only reinforced their status as one of baseball’s most dangerous teams.
If Chicago ultimately pulls off a deal for Peralta, it could be the move that solidifies their championship aspirations. For now, all eyes remain on the Mets’ trajectory and whether they decide to cash in on one of their most valuable assets.
