The St. Louis Cardinals have made a roster adjustment early in the 2026 season, optioning young infielder Thomas Saggese to Triple-A Memphis after a difficult stretch at the major league level. In a corresponding move, the club has recalled versatile infielder César Prieto in hopes of injecting more production into the lineup.
The decision comes as St. Louis continues to play competitive baseball, but the organization is clearly looking for ways to optimize its roster and maintain momentum. Saggese, who earned a spot on the Opening Day roster out of spring training, was given opportunities to contribute across multiple positions, including shortstop, third base, and even left field. However, he was unable to establish consistency during his stint in the majors.
Offensively, Saggese struggled to find his rhythm, posting a .170 batting average with limited extra-base production and just a .436 OPS through 18 games. Despite showing defensive versatility, his lack of offensive output ultimately led the Cardinals to send him back to the minors for further development and refinement.
In contrast, Prieto has forced his way back into the conversation with a strong performance at Triple-A Memphis. Over 28 games, he has been one of the organization’s most productive hitters, showcasing a powerful offensive profile that includes a high batting average, solid on-base skills, and impressive slugging numbers. His ability to play multiple infield positions including second base, shortstop, and third base adds further value to his call-up.
Although Prieto has limited MLB experience, having appeared in just a handful of games previously, his recent form in the minors suggests he may be better prepared for an extended opportunity at the big league level this time around. The Cardinals are hoping his offensive surge in Memphis can translate to meaningful contributions in St. Louis.
Manager Oliver Marmol has remained optimistic about his team’s overall direction, emphasizing the club’s competitiveness and effort despite early-season roster shuffling. He has praised the group’s intensity and consistency, pointing to the team’s ability to stay resilient through lineup adjustments.
