The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be finding their rhythm again after a difficult stretch earlier in the season, showing noticeable improvement over the past week. While the recent turnaround has given fans optimism, questions about the team’s long-term direction still remain. If Philadelphia were to suffer another collapse similar to the one it experienced just a month ago, speculation could quickly grow surrounding the future of several key veterans on the roster.
Among the names that have surprisingly surfaced in trade discussions is ace pitcher Zack Wheeler. Although moving Wheeler would seem almost unthinkable given his importance to the franchise, some analysts believe the Phillies could at least consider the idea if the right blockbuster package became available.
One proposed trade scenario from Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Shea suggested a massive deal between the Phillies and the San Diego Padres. In the hypothetical proposal, Philadelphia would send Wheeler to San Diego in exchange for three highly regarded prospects: Kruz Schoolcraft, Ethan Salas, and Bradgley Rodriguez.
According to Shea, the reasoning behind the trade would center on Philadelphia’s disappointing 2026 campaign. With the Phillies sitting at 17–21 and in third place in the National League East, combined with the hypothetical firing of manager Rob Thomson, the organization could decide it is time to move away from its current core and begin planning for the future.
Even at 35 years old, Wheeler continues to pitch at an elite level. His 3.12 ERA and strong WHIP numbers prove he remains one of the most dependable starters in baseball. However, because of his age, some evaluators believe his value as a trade asset may never be higher, especially if the Phillies begin to feel they are no longer realistic contenders this season.
The centerpiece of the proposed return would undoubtedly be Salas, who was once considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball. The young catcher generated enormous hype early in his professional career and was viewed by many scouts as a future superstar behind the plate. However, his development has slowed considerably over the past two seasons in the minor leagues, raising concerns about whether he can still reach that elite ceiling.
While Schoolcraft and Rodriguez also offer intriguing upside, many Phillies observers would likely hesitate to support trading away a proven ace like Wheeler for a package centered around unproven talent. Wheeler has been one of the cornerstones of Philadelphia’s recent success, and moving him would signal a dramatic organizational shift rather than a simple roster adjustment.
At this stage, the idea still feels highly unlikely. Unless the Phillies completely fall apart before the trade deadline, it would be difficult to imagine the front office seriously entertaining offers for one of the best pitchers in the league. For many fans, dealing Wheeler even for multiple top prospects—would simply be too risky for a team still capable of competing.
