The New York Rangers may have fallen short in the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery, but their biggest opportunity could still be ahead.
After entering the lottery with strong odds, the Rangers watched their hopes of landing the top overall selection slip away as the Toronto Maple Leafs secured the No. 1 pick and the San Jose Sharks jumped into the second spot. Instead of drafting near the top, New York now finds itself selecting fifth overall.
For many franchises, staying at No. 5 would still be considered a major win in a talent-rich draft class. But for the Rangers, simply staying put may not be enough.
With elite defensive prospect Chase Reid potentially available near the top of the board, pressure could mount on president and general manager Chris Drury to make a franchise-altering move.
The Rangers didn’t completely lose in the lottery but they certainly didn’t win.
Sliding down to fifth changed the entire complexion of their offseason strategy. While several high-end prospects are expected to remain available, there’s growing belief that the true game-changing talents may be gone before New York gets on the clock.
That possibility could force Drury into aggressive territory.
A blockbuster trade package involving the No. 5 overall selection, Dallas’ later first-round pick, and possibly a roster player could be enough to tempt San Jose into moving down from No. 2.
It would be a massive gamble.
But it could also become the defining move that reshapes the Rangers’ future.
The centerpiece of the speculation is Reid a defenseman viewed by many scouts as one of the most NHL-ready prospects in the entire draft class.
At 6-foot-2 and nearly 190 pounds, Reid combines elite skating, offensive instincts, puck movement, and physical intensity in a way that has executives across the league intrigued. Unlike many teenage prospects, he already carries the polish and maturity of a player capable of accelerating quickly toward NHL impact.
For a Rangers team desperate to strengthen its blue line for the future, Reid checks every possible box.
He’s expected to spend next season at Michigan State University, which could make him even more physically prepared by the time he reaches the professional level.
And that’s exactly why many analysts believe he won’t make it past the top three picks.
Trading into the top two would not come cheap.
The Rangers would likely need to sacrifice premium draft capital and potentially part with a young player to convince San Jose to move down. For a franchise already balancing present-day playoff expectations with long-term roster building, the decision would carry enormous risk.
Still, the timing may push New York toward bold action.
This offseason’s free-agent market is expected to be relatively thin, while trade opportunities involving star-caliber talent could be limited. That leaves the draft as one of the few realistic avenues for the Rangers to secure a cornerstone player capable of transforming the organization for years to come.
As draft night approaches, one major question continues to hover over the Rangers organization:
Will they stay patient at No. 5 and trust the board to fall in their favor or will Chris Drury push all his chips to the center of the table in pursuit of a potential franchise-changing star?
For a team eager to stay in championship contention while building for the future, standing still may no longer feel like enough.
