The New York Rangers are heading into a critical offseason after a disappointing 2025–26 campaign that saw them fall well short of expectations and miss the playoffs entirely. Finishing 30th in the league with a 34–39–9 record for just 77 points, the team endured one of its most underwhelming seasons in recent memory, forcing a hard reassessment of its current roster and long-term direction.
What was once viewed as a promising contention window now appears to have closed, with the organization widely expected to explore significant roster changes in an effort to retool rather than run it back. As a result, multiple established players have already surfaced in trade conversations, signaling that no position group is guaranteed to remain intact heading into the summer.
One of the most notable names generating discussion is Alexis Lafrenière, the former first overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft. According to insider David Pagnotta on Leafs Morning Take, the Rangers may revisit trade discussions involving the 24-year-old winger as they evaluate ways to reshape their future core.
Lafrenière’s name has lingered in trade rumors in the past, largely due to the gap between expectations and production since entering the league. While he has developed into a reliable top-six forward capable of contributing offensively, he has yet to fully emerge as the franchise-altering star New York envisioned when selecting him at No. 1 overall.
Despite signing a long-term extension during the 2024–25 season that was expected to keep him in New York through 2032, the situation has shifted significantly following the team’s downturn. The Rangers have already begun making major roster decisions, including moving on from key veteran pieces such as Artemi Panarin, reflecting a broader organizational reset.
A potential trade involving Lafrenière would not necessarily reflect a lack of value, but rather a belief that a change of environment could unlock another level in his development.
