The New York Mets’ recent decision involving top pitching prospect Jonah Tong has sparked major speculation about both a possible promotion to the major leagues and concerns about a potential injury.
Although the Mets have struggled throughout much of the 2026 season, the team has shown signs of improvement during the month of May. Even so, New York’s starting rotation continues to face serious questions, especially after the loss of veteran pitcher Clay Holmes to a long-term injury. Combined with inconsistent performances from several starters, the Mets are actively searching for ways to stabilize the rotation moving forward.
One possible solution may come from within the organization rather than through an external trade. That possibility gained attention after Tong was unexpectedly scratched from his scheduled Triple-A start on Wednesday.
According to Mets insider Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online, the 22-year-old right-hander was initially lined up to pitch for Triple-A Syracuse before being removed from the start at the last minute. The sudden decision immediately fueled speculation that the Mets could be preparing to promote Tong to the major league roster.
Given the current state of New York’s pitching staff, the timing certainly raises questions. The Mets have endured several rough outings from their starters recently, including Nolan McLean’s difficult nine-run performance and David Peterson’s ongoing struggles, as he currently carries an ERA above 5.00. With the rotation lacking consistency and depth, the organization may feel pressure to explore younger options who could potentially provide a spark.
Tong remains one of the Mets’ more intriguing pitching prospects despite inconsistent results. Last season, he struggled during limited appearances, posting a 7.71 ERA across 18.2 innings while recording 22 strikeouts over five starts. His 2026 numbers at Triple-A have also been uneven, as he owns a 5.68 ERA with a 1-3 record through nine starts. However, his strikeout ability continues to stand out, with 55 strikeouts in just 38 innings pitched, showing the type of raw talent that still makes him a highly regarded arm within the organization.
At the same time, Tong’s control issues have remained a concern, as he has also issued 24 walks this season. That inconsistency makes any potential promotion somewhat risky, particularly for a Mets team already fighting to stay competitive in the National League playoff race.
Of course, a call-up is not the only possible explanation for Tong being scratched. The late change has also created concerns that he could be dealing with an injury or physical issue that has not yet been publicly disclosed. Until the Mets provide further clarification, uncertainty will continue surrounding the young pitcher’s status.
Whether the move signals an upcoming MLB debut or simply precautionary medical attention, Tong’s situation has quickly become one of the more closely watched developments for the Mets as they attempt to keep their season afloat.
