Former Philadelphia Phillies standout Rhys Hoskins could soon find himself fighting to stay on the Cleveland Guardians’ roster, as the veteran slugger is reportedly in danger of being designated for assignment after an underwhelming start to the 2026 season. Once considered one of the most reliable right-handed power bats in baseball, Hoskins’ career trajectory has shifted dramatically since suffering a devastating ACL tear during spring training ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Before the injury, Hoskins had built a reputation in Philadelphia as a consistent middle-of-the-order force capable of delivering 25-plus home runs annually while providing clutch offensive production. During his prime years with the Phillies, he was regularly viewed as a valuable contributor worth between 1.5 and 3.0 bWAR per season, cementing himself as a fan favorite and an important piece of the club’s lineup.
Although Hoskins managed to rebound enough to hit 26 home runs for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024, the overall impact of his game noticeably declined. Despite the strong home run total, his all-around performance resulted in a disappointing negative 0.1 bWAR, highlighting concerns about his consistency, defense, and overall offensive efficiency.
The Cleveland Guardians took a low-risk chance on Hoskins this season, signing him to a one-year contract that originally came as a minor league deal with $1.5 million guaranteed. The expectation was that his power bat could provide a boost in the lineup, particularly in a designated hitter role where defensive limitations would matter less. However, the production simply has not matched what the organization hoped for.
Through the early portion of the season, Hoskins has struggled badly at the plate, batting just .189 with five home runs and a modest 106 OPS+. While the power flashes remain, the consistency has not been there, and Cleveland may soon begin exploring alternative options to strengthen its offense.
According to Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, the Guardians could ultimately decide to move on if Hoskins fails to heat up offensively in the coming weeks. Kelly also suggested that if the Cincinnati Reds become sellers later in the season, a player like Eugenio Suárez could emerge as a possible replacement target for Cleveland as a short-term offensive upgrade.
Because Hoskins’ contract carries relatively little financial risk, the Guardians would have flexibility if they choose to designate him for assignment. And should that happen, speculation could quickly grow about a possible reunion with the Philadelphia Phillies, a team that could still use another experienced right-handed power hitter off the bench or in a platoon role. For Phillies fans, the idea of bringing back a familiar face like Hoskins may still carry emotional appeal, even if his best years appear to be behind him.
