New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is hopeful that Bo Bichette’s recent breakthrough performance signals the end of a prolonged stretch of misfortune for the star infielder, as the team continues to search for consistency during the 2026 season.
The Mets avoided a series sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night, delivering a convincing 7–1 victory at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. A major storyline from the game was Bichette’s standout offensive display, which not only helped power the Mets to a much-needed win but also drew praise from the coaching staff and fans alike.
Bichette delivered a flawless night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. His most impactful moment came in the fourth inning, when he lined a two-run single that gave New York a 3–1 lead, shifting momentum firmly in the Mets’ favor. From that point onward, the Mets controlled the game and never looked back.
Following the win, Mendoza expressed optimism that Bichette’s performance could mark a turning point in what has been a frustrating season for both the player and the team. Speaking after the game, he suggested that Bichette has been battling poor luck and believes better results are on the horizon for the talented hitter.
“Hopefully, now, he continues to get results and he gets going here. I feel like this guy has been very unlucky, I hate to say it. He’s a good hitter,” Mendoza said, as reported by SNY Mets.
Advanced metrics also support the idea that positive regression could be coming for Bichette. Entering the final game of the series, he held a low .239 batting average on balls in play (BABIP), often an indicator that a player may be experiencing unfavorable outcomes rather than a decline in skill.
However, despite the encouraging signs, Bichette’s power production has yet to match his previous standards. His slugging percentage sits at just .310 so far in the 2026 campaign, a noticeable drop compared to his career mark of .457 and his strong 2025 season with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he was a two-time All-Star and established himself as one of the league’s most dangerous hitters.
As the Mets look to build momentum, Bichette will aim to carry this renewed form into their upcoming three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, beginning Friday in San Diego.
