JUST IN: Toronto Releases Former Phillies Pitcher From Triple-A

While the Toronto Blue Jays continued their interleague series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the organization quietly made a roster move involving a former major league pitcher.

The Blue Jays secured a narrow 3-2 victory over the Phillies on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre, but off the field the club announced the release of left-handed pitcher Michael Plassmeyer from the organization. The move came during the ongoing series and marked the end of Plassmeyer’s brief tenure within Toronto’s farm system.

According to MLB’s transaction log, the Buffalo Bisons, Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate, officially released the veteran southpaw despite a strong performance at the minor league level throughout the season.

Plassmeyer had not appeared in a Major League game for Toronto, but his numbers with Triple-A Buffalo were impressive. In 20 appearances, he posted a 3-1 record with a stellar 1.82 ERA, emerging as one of the more reliable pitchers in the Bisons’ bullpen. His release surprised many observers given his consistent production and effectiveness on the mound.

The 29-year-old pitcher entered professional baseball after being selected in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Since then, he has worked his way through multiple organizations while striving to establish himself as a full-time Major League contributor.

Plassmeyer is perhaps best known for his time with the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He appeared in parts of the 2022 and 2023 MLB seasons with Philadelphia, making three career Major League appearances. Although his big-league statistics were modest, posting an 0-2 record with a 9.82 ERA, he continued to demonstrate value as organizational pitching depth.

During the offseason, Toronto added Plassmeyer on a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training as part of a larger group of veteran signings intended to strengthen organizational depth. The Blue Jays announced the move in January alongside several other free-agent additions, hoping the experienced left-hander could provide insurance for the pitching staff throughout the year.

Despite not earning a promotion to the Major League roster, Plassmeyer’s strong Triple-A performance could quickly attract interest from other clubs around baseball. Pitching depth remains one of the most sought-after commodities during the middle of the season, and teams dealing with injuries or bullpen concerns may view him as a low-risk option with upside.

As for Toronto, the Blue Jays continue to battle for position in a competitive American League East. The club currently holds a 33-35 record through 68 games, placing them third in the division. While they have struggled to find consistency, the Blue Jays remain within striking distance in the playoff race and are looking to build momentum during the second half of the season.

Following the conclusion of their series against Philadelphia, Toronto will remain at Rogers Centre for a highly anticipated divisional showdown against the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays are also attempting to build on last year’s success after reaching the World Series for the first time since their championship-winning 1993 campaign.

Although Plassmeyer’s departure may not make major headlines, his strong Triple-A track record suggests he could soon receive another opportunity elsewhere as organizations across the league continue searching for experienced pitching help.
