The New York Rangers have taken a key step in solidifying their goaltending depth for the future, agreeing to a two-year contract extension with promising young netminder Dylan Garand. The move ensures the organization retains one of its most highly regarded internal options as he continues his development toward a full-time NHL role.
The 24-year-old goalie showed encouraging signs in limited NHL action last season, making three appearances for New York and finishing with an impressive 2-0-1 record. In those outings, Garand posted outstanding numbers, including a 1.62 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage, highlighting his ability to perform at the highest level when called upon.
Garand’s brief NHL stint included several standout performances. He made 35 saves in his debut against the Winnipeg Jets and followed it up with his first career win just days later after allowing only one goal against the Chicago Blackhawks. His strong start placed him in rare company, becoming the first Rangers rookie goaltender since Henrik Lundqvist to record a point in each of his first three NHL appearances.
The extension is structured as a two-way deal, giving the Rangers flexibility while rewarding Garand’s progress. He is set to earn $850,000 in the first year before the contract converts to a one-way deal worth $900,000 in the second year, according to reports.
Most of Garand’s 2026 campaign was spent with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL, where he continued to log heavy minutes as a starter. Over 36 games, he posted a 16-15-2 record with a 2.83 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage, gaining valuable experience despite mixed team results.
Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, Garand has developed steadily within the Rangers organization, playing 148 career AHL games exclusively with Hartford. Beyond his professional experience, he has also built an impressive international résumé with Team Canada, including a gold medal at the 2022 World Junior Championship and a shutout performance in his debut at the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
With this extension, the Rangers reaffirm their belief in Garand as a long-term goaltending asset, positioning him as a potential future contributor behind their current NHL core.
