Kyle Schwarber continued his remarkable power surge on Sunday, delivering the decisive blow with his 30th home run of the season as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the struggling New York Mets 5-4 at Citi Field.
The veteran slugger broke a late tie with a towering two-run blast in the seventh inning, helping Philadelphia complete another important victory and continue its impressive climb in the National League standings.
After watching a comfortable three-run advantage disappear over the fifth and sixth innings, the Phillies wasted little time responding. Rookie outfielder Justin Crawford sparked the rally with a leadoff single before Trea Turner recorded the first out of the inning. That brought Schwarber to the plate against Mets starter Kodai Senga, who had settled into a groove after entering the game in relief.
Senga challenged Schwarber with a series of forkballs before finally turning to a fastball on a 1-2 count. The Phillies’ designated hitter didn’t miss the opportunity, crushing the pitch deep to center field for a two-run homer that restored Philadelphia’s lead at 5-4 and ultimately proved to be the game-winning swing.
The blast marked Schwarber’s 30th home run of the season, making it the sixth consecutive year he has reached the 30-homer plateau and the eighth time in his major league career. His latest milestone further strengthens his case as one of baseball’s premier power hitters while helping fuel Philadelphia’s remarkable midseason turnaround.
Schwarber contributed far more than just the home run. He also collected a single, stole second base, and played a key role in the Phillies’ three-run third inning that gave the visitors an early 3-0 advantage.
Bryce Harper started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before Alec Bohm lined an RBI double into the gap. Brandon Marsh followed with an RBI single to cap the inning and put Philadelphia firmly in control.
Starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo turned in another solid outing despite working through multiple difficult situations. The left-hander surrendered just one run on four hits across five innings while striking out six batters and issuing three walks. Luzardo repeatedly escaped trouble, including a critical bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning when he struck out Bo Bichette before inducing Eric Wagaman to end the threat.
The Mets finally broke through against Philadelphia’s bullpen in the sixth inning. Chase Shugart allowed three runs as New York erased the deficit, highlighted by rookie A.J. Ewing’s game-tying two-run pinch-hit home run. Rookie Carson Benge also continued his productive afternoon, driving in one run with an RBI single before adding another with a groundout that briefly gave the Mets life.
Philadelphia’s bullpen regrouped after the shaky sixth. Kyle Backhus earned his first major league victory by recording two crucial outs, while José Alvarado escaped a tense seventh inning despite his own throwing error putting runners in scoring position.
Orion Kerkering delivered perhaps the biggest relief performance of the afternoon in the eighth inning, escaping a bases-loaded situation by striking out Francisco Alvarez to preserve the slim lead.
Closer Jhoan Duran then shut the door in the ninth, tossing a scoreless inning to record his 21st save of the season and secure another important Phillies victory.
For New York, missed opportunities defined the afternoon. The Mets stranded 14 runners on base and finished just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position, continuing an offensive slump that has contributed to eight losses in their last nine games.
Rookie Carson Benge was one of the few bright spots for the Mets, driving in two runs, while Kodai Senga was charged with the loss after allowing Schwarber’s decisive home run. Opener Cionel Pérez threw a perfect first inning before Tobias Meyers surrendered three runs over the next three frames.
The victory continued Philadelphia’s outstanding run of form, improving the club to 38-18 over its last 56 games and pushing the Phillies to 10 games above the .500 mark once again. Behind Schwarber’s powerful bat and another resilient team effort, Philadelphia continues to build momentum as the postseason race intensifies.
