The St. Louis Cardinals continue to boast one of the deepest farm systems in Major League Baseball, providing the organization with several promising young players who could make an impact in the big leagues before the end of the season.
While much of the recent attention has centered on top prospects Joshua Báez and reliever Luis Gastelum, another talented player is quietly making a compelling case for a promotion. Left-handed pitcher Quinn Mathews has steadily emerged as one of the organization’s most intriguing internal options, and his recent performances at Triple-A suggest he may be ready for an opportunity in St. Louis.
The Cardinals’ minor league system has earned widespread praise across baseball. In MLB.com’s latest Top 100 prospects rankings, St. Louis placed three players on the prestigious list, with catcher Rainiel Rodriguez ranked No. 13, left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle at No. 23, and outfielder Joshua Báez checking in at No. 50.
Even with those highly regarded prospects grabbing headlines, Mathews has quietly continued to elevate his stock through consistent performances with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.
The 22-year-old southpaw has made 15 starts this season, compiling a 3.95 ERA across 66 innings while steadily improving as the campaign has progressed. More impressively, his recent stretch has showcased the kind of consistency that often precedes a major league call-up.
Since allowing more than three runs against the Iowa Cubs on May 22, Mathews has been one of Memphis’ most dependable starters. Over his last six starts, he has surrendered just seven earned runs in 30 1/3 innings, producing an outstanding 2.08 ERA while consistently giving his club quality outings.
That level of sustained success has strengthened the argument that the Cardinals should begin evaluating him at the major league level.
Although veteran left-hander Matthew Liberatore recently delivered an encouraging performance by allowing just one earned run over five innings against the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis still has room to add another capable arm, particularly one with long-term upside.
Mathews offers flexibility that could benefit the Cardinals in several ways. He has the potential to contribute as a traditional starter, provide innings out of the bullpen, or even fill a hybrid swingman role depending on the club’s needs during the second half of the season.
His development is no accident.
Currently ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Cardinals’ organization, Mathews has continued refining his command and overall repertoire while demonstrating the poise expected from one of the franchise’s top young pitchers. His recent performances indicate that many aspects of his game are beginning to come together at exactly the right time.
With the August 3 MLB trade deadline approaching, the Cardinals are not widely expected to pursue blockbuster additions on the trade market. Instead, the organization could choose to strengthen its roster from within, continuing a trend established by the recent promotions of Jimmy Crooks and Blaze Jordan.
If St. Louis elects to improve internally rather than making major acquisitions, Mathews appears well-positioned to become one of the next prospects to receive the call.
Alongside Báez and Gastelum, the talented left-hander has increasingly made a convincing case that he deserves an opportunity to showcase his abilities at the major league level, potentially giving the Cardinals another valuable young contributor as they continue their push through the second half of the season.
