The Philadelphia Phillies have continued to strengthen their roster as they prepare for the second half of the season, signing veteran outfielder Bryan De La Cruz to a major league contract in an effort to improve their outfield depth.
The move comes as Philadelphia continues its impressive turnaround after a slow start to the 2026 campaign. Since May, the Phillies have emerged as one of baseball’s hottest teams, climbing back into contention and putting pressure on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East race. What once looked like a disappointing season has quickly transformed into one filled with postseason expectations.
Despite the recent surge, the Phillies still have several roster weaknesses they hope to address before the MLB trade deadline. President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski has built a reputation for making aggressive moves to strengthen playoff contenders, and Philadelphia is widely expected to be active in the trade market once again.
While a bigger addition could still be on the horizon, the Phillies took an early step by bringing in De La Cruz, a right-handed hitter who adds valuable organizational depth and gives the club another experienced option in the outfield.
De La Cruz Offers Experience and Right-Handed Power
The 28-year-old has spent time with multiple organizations throughout his major league career, most recently appearing with the Atlanta Braves during the 2025 season. His brief stint with Atlanta was underwhelming, as he hit just .191 with a .240 on-base percentage and a .213 slugging percentage across 16 games.
However, De La Cruz has previously demonstrated the ability to provide power at the major league level, making him an intriguing depth option for a Phillies team searching for more offensive production from its outfield.
This season, De La Cruz has been playing at Triple-A within the Phillies organization, where his improved performance earned him a major league contract and a place on the club’s 40-man roster. Although he has been optioned back to Triple-A for now, the move suggests Philadelphia sees him as someone who could contribute later this season if the need arises.
Over 491 career major league games, De La Cruz owns a .251 batting average, a .295 on-base percentage, and a .402 slugging percentage while hitting 58 home runs. Although his ability to reach base has never been a major strength, his career slugging percentage reflects the power potential that has kept him on big league rosters.
Helpful Depth, But Likely Not the Final Answer
The Phillies’ outfield has remained one of the club’s biggest concerns throughout the season. While the offense has shown signs of improvement—helped by a resurgence from shortstop Trea Turner—the team continues to search for consistent production from multiple outfield spots.
De La Cruz gives Philadelphia another experienced right-handed bat capable of filling in when needed, but he is unlikely to solve the team’s long-term outfield issues on his own. Instead, his signing appears to be more about increasing depth and providing insurance while the front office evaluates larger upgrades ahead of the trade deadline.
With Philadelphia firmly in playoff contention, the organization is expected to continue exploring external options in search of a more impactful everyday outfielder. De La Cruz may prove to be a useful complementary piece, but the Phillies are still likely to pursue a more significant addition if they hope to strengthen their lineup for a postseason run.
