The St. Louis Cardinals have released veteran first baseman and outfielder Bligh Madris, bringing an end to his brief stint in the organization and paving the way for him to continue his professional career overseas.
According to his MLB.com player profile, Madris has officially been released by the Cardinals. The Cardinal Nation’s Brian Walton later reported that the 30-year-old has agreed to join a club in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League, where he is expected to receive a more lucrative guaranteed contract and an opportunity to play every day.
Madris signed a minor league deal with St. Louis before the start of the 2026 season and turned in an impressive offensive campaign with Triple-A Memphis. Across 284 plate appearances, he slashed .277/.389/.519 while belting 14 home runs, establishing himself as one of the Redbirds’ most productive hitters.
Despite those strong numbers, Madris never received a promotion to the Major League roster.
His path to St. Louis was blocked by the Cardinals’ roster makeup, particularly at first base, where Alec Burleson has firmly established himself as the club’s everyday option. The Cardinals also feature several left-handed outfielders, while designated hitter opportunities have largely gone to Iván Herrera, leaving little room for another left-handed bat.
The organization’s long-term direction also played a significant role. With the Cardinals focused on developing younger talent during their rebuilding phase, opportunities for veteran depth players like Madris became increasingly limited despite his production at Triple-A.
Rather than continue waiting for a Major League opportunity, Madris opted to capitalize on his strong season by accepting an offer from the KBO League, where he is expected to receive regular playing time and a higher guaranteed salary.
The move marks the second overseas stop of Madris’ professional career after he previously played in the Australian Baseball League during the 2020-21 season.
Throughout his minor league career, Madris has consistently demonstrated offensive production. Over 2,085 Triple-A plate appearances, he owns a career .255/.350/.450 slash line, proving himself to be a reliable run producer at baseball’s highest minor league level.
His success, however, has not fully translated to the majors.
Across parts of three MLB seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Detroit Tigers from 2022 through 2024, Madris appeared in limited action and compiled a career batting line of .204/.273/.286 over 228 plate appearances.
His best Major League stretch came with Detroit in 2024, when he posted a respectable .269/.324/.358 batting line across 75 plate appearances before being outrighted after the season. The Tigers later re-signed him to a minor league contract, but injuries limited him to just 60 minor league games in 2025, preventing him from earning another trip back to the big leagues.
Now heading to South Korea, Madris will look to revive his career on the international stage, where many former MLB players have found renewed success while continuing to showcase their offensive abilities against top-level competition.
