Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper has made it clear that he believes Detroit Tigers rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle would have been a perfect fit in Philadelphia, praising the young infielder’s talent, personality, and deep connection to the city.

Speaking before the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, Harper reflected on McGonigle’s impressive rise and admitted he wishes the Pennsylvania native had ended up wearing Phillies red instead of Tigers blue.

Although Harper was born in Las Vegas and began his Major League Baseball career with the Washington Nationals, he has become one of Philadelphia’s most beloved athletes. His passion, competitive spirit, and embrace of the city’s demanding fan base have made him a symbol of the Phillies. That is why he believes McGonigle, who grew up in nearby Delaware County, naturally belongs in Philadelphia.

“He’s had a great career thus far,” Harper said while speaking with reporters, according to FOX29 Philadelphia’s Jeff Skversky. “I wish he was a Phillie just because he was from here and everything else.”

Harper also shared a memorable conversation he recently had with the Tigers rookie. Curious about where McGonigle was during the Phillies’ memorable 2022 National League pennant run, Harper asked him directly.

McGonigle’s response impressed the two-time National League MVP.

“He said, ‘We were in the stands yelling at all the other people for you,'” Harper recalled. “You can tell the type of person he is. It fits Philly.”

The exchange only strengthened Harper’s admiration for the 21-year-old, whose love for his hometown franchise remains evident despite launching his professional career with Detroit.

Ironically, the Phillies had a chance to draft McGonigle during the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Instead, Philadelphia selected shortstop Aidan Miller with the 27th overall pick, while the Tigers grabbed McGonigle 10 selections later. Miller has since undergone a back procedure that is expected to delay his major league debut, while McGonigle has rapidly developed into one of baseball’s brightest young stars.

Detroit’s confidence in the young infielder became clear when the organization signed him to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension less than three weeks after his MLB debut. McGonigle has quickly rewarded that investment with outstanding production, emerging as one of the leading candidates for the American League Rookie of the Year award.

Through 413 plate appearances this season, McGonigle is batting .283 with eight home runs, 34 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, a .392 on-base percentage, a .420 slugging percentage, and an impressive .812 OPS. His all-around performance has helped establish him as a cornerstone of Detroit’s future.

Although McGonigle went hitless in his first career All-Star Game, expectations remain high that he will become a fixture in future Midsummer Classics. Harper, meanwhile, says he’ll continue following the young star’s career closely.

While the two are unlikely to become teammates, their shared admiration for Philadelphia has created a unique connection. For Harper, McGonigle represents the type of hometown talent every Phillies fan dreams of seeing wear the club’s uniform, even if that opportunity ultimately slipped away.
