Breaking News: K-State Continues MLB Pipeline as Inoue, Smith Turn Pro

Kansas State’s impressive 2026 baseball season continued to pay dividends after the conclusion of the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft, as seniors Shintaro Inoue and Miles Smith officially signed undrafted free agent contracts with MLB organizations. Inoue reached an agreement with the Athletics, while Smith will begin his professional career with the Washington Nationals, giving the Wildcats two more players at the professional level.

The signings further highlight the growing strength of Kansas State’s baseball program, which has steadily produced professional talent in recent years. With Inoue and Smith joining the professional ranks, the Wildcats now have six players from the 2026 roster entering MLB organizations. They join shortstop Dee Kennedy, who was selected in the fourth round of the draft, right-handed pitchers James Guyette and Tazwell Butler, who were taken in the fifth and 10th rounds, respectively, and catcher Bear Madliak, who was selected in the 18th round. The combination of drafted players and free agent signings underscores the depth of talent on Kansas State’s roster and reflects the program’s continued rise under its coaching staff.

For Inoue, the contract with the Athletics caps an outstanding collegiate career that established him as one of the Wildcats’ most dependable and productive players. The senior second baseman from Yamaguchi, Japan, proved to be one of the team’s most durable performers throughout the 2026 campaign. Alongside only one other teammate, he started all 57 games, providing Kansas State with stability in the middle infield while consistently producing at the plate.

Inoue finished the season with a .278 batting average, complemented by a strong .395 on-base percentage and .422 slugging percentage. He collected 14 doubles, six home runs, 34 RBIs, and crossed the plate 51 times, finishing second on the Wildcats in runs scored. His ability to get on base, generate extra-base hits, and contribute offensively throughout the season made him one of the club’s most reliable everyday players.

His performances earned recognition beyond Manhattan. In March, Inoue was named the Big 12 Player of the Week after leading Kansas State to an important conference series victory over Houston. During the opening game of that series, he delivered one of the finest individual performances by a Wildcat this season, setting career highs with five hits and six RBIs while helping power the Wildcats to a crucial win. The remarkable performance also earned him national recognition, as he was selected to the Baseball America Collegiate National Team of the Week, placing him among the top collegiate performers in the country for that week.

Defensively, Inoue’s consistency at second base also played an important role in Kansas State’s success. His dependable glove work, baseball instincts and experience gave the Wildcats stability up the middle while his offensive production provided balance throughout the lineup. Those qualities ultimately convinced the Athletics to add him to their organization despite him going undrafted.

Smith also earned his opportunity to play professional baseball after serving as one of Kansas State’s trusted bullpen arms during his senior campaign. The right-handed reliever from Flintville, Tennessee, appeared in 20 games during the 2026 season, providing valuable innings in relief as the Wildcats battled through a challenging Big 12 schedule.

Although Smith finished the year with a 7.01 ERA and a 2-5 record, his underlying numbers demonstrated the type of swing-and-miss ability that professional scouts value. Over 34 2/3 innings, he struck out 31 batters, averaging nearly a strikeout per inning, while holding opposing hitters to a respectable .266 batting average. He also contributed to one combined shutout during the season, showcasing his ability to deliver effective innings in key situations.

The Washington Nationals saw enough potential in Smith’s arm strength, competitiveness and strikeout ability to offer him a free agent contract following the draft. The opportunity gives him a chance to continue his development within a professional organization despite not hearing his name called during the draft itself.

The addition of Inoue and Smith to professional baseball further validates the quality of Kansas State’s 2026 squad. While four Wildcats were selected during the MLB Draft, the successful free agent signings demonstrate that professional clubs continued evaluating players after the draft concluded, rewarding those who displayed the tools and potential to compete at the next level.

Kansas State concluded the 2026 season with a 30-27 overall record, extending one of the most successful stretches in modern program history. The Wildcats secured their fourth consecutive 30-win season, matching the longest streak of 30-win campaigns in school history and accomplishing the feat for the first time since the program recorded four straight 30-win seasons from 1988 through 1991.

The milestone reflects the steady progress of the Wildcats under their current coaching staff, as the program has combined consistent on-field success with an increasing ability to develop players capable of advancing to professional baseball. With six members of the 2026 roster now entering MLB organizations, Kansas State continues to strengthen its reputation as a program that prepares players for opportunities at the next level while building sustained success in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference.
