News Update: Rangers Sign No. 5 Pick Alberts Smits to Entry-Level Deal

The New York Rangers have officially secured the services of one of the organization’s most promising young talents, signing 2026 first-round draft pick Alberts Smits to a three-year entry-level contract less than three weeks after selecting the Latvian defenseman with the fifth overall pick in the NHL Draft.

The announcement marks another significant step in the Rangers’ commitment to strengthening their blue line with elite young talent as Smits begins his professional journey in North America. The club confirmed the signing on Wednesday, welcoming the 18-year-old defenseman to the organization with a social media post declaring him “Officially a Blueshirt.”

Smits enters the Rangers system with considerable expectations after making history as the highest-selected Latvian-born player ever drafted in the NHL. His combination of size, mobility, hockey intelligence, and professional experience made him one of the most highly regarded defensemen available in the 2026 draft class and a cornerstone addition to New York’s future.

Unlike many teenage prospects entering the NHL, Smits already possesses valuable experience competing against professional players in Europe. During the 2025-26 season, he suited up for Jukurit in Finland’s top professional league (Liiga), appearing in 38 games while recording six goals and seven assists for 13 points. His offensive production, combined with reliable defensive play against older competition, significantly boosted his draft stock.

Later in the season, Smits joined German club EHC Munich in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), where he continued his development against another group of seasoned professionals. Although he recorded just one assist in five regular-season appearances, he elevated his performance during the playoffs, contributing two goals and four assists for six points in 11 postseason contests while helping his team compete deep into the playoffs.

His international experience also extended to the biggest stage, representing Latvia at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Despite facing elite international competition, Smits impressed with two assists in four games, further demonstrating his ability to compete against some of the world’s top players despite being only 18 years old.

That extensive experience playing professional hockey before arriving in North America has many scouts viewing Smits as one of the most NHL-ready prospects from the 2026 draft class. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing approximately 205 pounds, he combines NHL-caliber size with excellent skating ability, strong puck-moving skills, composure under pressure, and a mature two-way game that projects well at hockey’s highest level.

The Rangers believe those attributes could give Smits a legitimate opportunity to compete for a roster spot during training camp. If he performs well throughout preseason, the young defenseman could earn a place on New York’s opening-night roster, an impressive achievement for a player selected just weeks earlier.

However, the organization is expected to remain patient with his development if necessary. Should Smits require additional seasoning or struggle to secure a regular role early in the season, he will be eligible to continue his development with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ American Hockey League affiliate. The AHL would provide an ideal environment for him to adjust to the North American style of play while receiving significant ice time before making the jump to the NHL full-time.

Regardless of where he begins the 2026-27 campaign, Smits is widely viewed as one of the Rangers’ most important long-term building blocks. His signing ensures the franchise has one of its premier prospects under contract as it continues constructing a roster capable of contending for the Stanley Cup in the coming years.

For New York, securing Smits’ signature so quickly after the draft reflects the organization’s confidence in his potential and commitment to accelerating his development. Rangers fans will now eagerly watch his progress during training camp as the highly touted Latvian defenseman begins what the club hopes will be a lengthy and successful NHL career on Broadway.
