Veteran infielder Jonathan Ornelas has officially chosen to opt out of his minor league contract with the New York Yankees, becoming a free agent after a productive season at Triple-A that failed to earn him a promotion to the major league roster.
According to MLB insider Francys Romero, Ornelas exercised the opt-out clause in his contract this week after spending the first half of the 2026 season with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. The move allows the 26-year-old to explore opportunities with other organizations in hopes of returning to the major leagues.
The timing of Ornelas’ decision comes as teams across baseball prepare for the August 3 MLB trade deadline, when clubs begin searching for experienced depth pieces to strengthen their rosters for the stretch run.
Strong Triple-A season wasn’t enough
Ornelas leaves the Yankees organization after putting together one of the strongest offensive campaigns of his professional career.
Through his time at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the versatile infielder slashed .299/.362/.480 while collecting 13 doubles, nine home runs and 39 RBIs. His consistent production at the plate helped establish him as one of the more productive hitters in the International League.
In addition to his offensive resurgence, Ornelas continued to showcase the defensive versatility that has long been considered one of his biggest strengths.
Throughout the season, he logged innings at shortstop, second base and third base, while also making appearances in left field, giving the Yankees valuable flexibility across multiple positions.
Despite those contributions, New York never promoted him to the major league roster.
Yankees never found room on roster
Although injuries and roster changes forced the Yankees to use 19 different position players during the 2026 season, Ornelas remained in Triple-A throughout the first half.
The lack of an opportunity became increasingly surprising considering his offensive production.
Earlier in the year, Ornelas got off to a scorching start, posting an impressive 1.017 OPS by the end of April, immediately establishing himself as one of Scranton’s hottest hitters.
However, even as his strong play continued, the Yankees chose other internal options when filling roster vacancies.
With no clear path to the majors in New York, exercising the opt-out clause became an increasingly logical decision.
Looking for another MLB opportunity
Ornelas enters free agency with three seasons of major league experience already on his résumé.
The infielder previously appeared in the majors with the Texas Rangers from 2023 through 2025 before spending time with the Atlanta Braves later in the 2025 season.
Across his major league career, Ornelas owns a .208 batting average, along with a .263 on-base percentage and .245 slugging percentage. While those offensive numbers have been modest, teams have continued to value his defensive flexibility and ability to fill multiple roles on a roster.
Former top draft pick seeking fresh start
Originally selected by the Rangers in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Ornelas was once viewed as one of Texas’ promising infield prospects.
After several years in the Rangers’ organization, he was traded to the Atlanta Braves in May 2025 in exchange for cash considerations.
Following the 2025 season, Ornelas entered free agency before signing a minor league contract with the Yankees in November 2025.
He also impressed during spring training, batting .280/.333/.440 over 13 Grapefruit League games. Despite that performance, he narrowly missed making New York’s Opening Day roster.
Dramatic turnaround after difficult 2025
Ornelas’ impressive offensive numbers this season represent a significant turnaround from last year.
During the 2025 campaign split between the Rangers’ and Braves’ Triple-A affiliates, he struggled offensively, hitting just .196/.295/.303 against International League pitching.
His resurgence in 2026 demonstrated noticeable improvements both at the plate and in his overall offensive consistency, likely increasing his appeal to teams looking for affordable roster depth.
Trade deadline could create opportunities
With the trade deadline approaching, Ornelas may find himself in an ideal position to secure another major league opportunity.
Playoff contenders often seek experienced utility players capable of filling multiple defensive positions without requiring significant financial commitments or prospect capital.
Signing Ornelas as a free agent would allow clubs to add an experienced, versatile bench option without surrendering prospects in a trade.
His ability to play virtually anywhere on the infield—and even contribute in the outfield—could make him particularly attractive to contenders looking to strengthen their bench for the final two months of the season.
Rebuilding clubs could offer regular playing time
In addition to contenders, rebuilding organizations may also view Ornelas as a worthwhile addition.
At just 26 years old, he remains young enough to contribute beyond the current season while providing valuable depth during a rebuilding process.
For clubs evaluating younger prospects, Ornelas could serve as a dependable major league option capable of handling multiple positions until top prospects are ready for permanent promotions.
Career enters pivotal stage
By opting out of his Yankees contract, Ornelas is betting that his strong Triple-A performance will open doors elsewhere.
After proving he can produce offensively while continuing to provide defensive versatility, the former Rangers and Braves infielder is expected to attract interest from organizations seeking immediate infield depth.
With the trade deadline less than three weeks away and roster movement expected to accelerate across Major League Baseball, Ornelas now enters free agency hoping another club will reward his breakout Triple-A season with a long-awaited return to the major leagues.
