Auburn men’s golfer Logan Reilly is making a major statement on the national amateur golf stage, advancing to the semifinals of the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
The rising sophomore continued his impressive run Friday by defeating Liberty’s Michael Lugiano 6&4 in the quarterfinals, reaching the final four of one of the most prestigious tournaments in amateur golf.
Reilly Dominates Quarterfinal Match
Reilly wasted little time establishing control against Lugiano. He won the opening hole and, after Lugiano briefly squared the match on the second, quickly regained the advantage on the third.
From there, the Auburn standout steadily pulled away. He reached 4-up through 11 holes, using a combination of accurate ball-striking and timely birdies to put significant pressure on his opponent.
The decisive stretch came on the 14th hole. Reilly hit an excellent tee shot on the par-3, putting himself in position for another birdie. Lugiano struggled around the green, while Reilly converted his opportunity to move to 5-up with five holes remaining. Lugiano then hit his tee shot out of bounds on the 15th, effectively ending the contest.
The match officially ended 6&4, meaning Reilly had built an insurmountable six-hole advantage with only four holes left.
A Remarkable Run Through Match Play
Reilly’s path to the semifinals has been anything but easy.
After shooting 2-under 138 during the stroke-play portion of the tournament, he advanced into match play and then defeated Emile Lebrun in 19 holes. He followed that with a 2&1 victory over Evan Liu before facing Oklahoma standout Ryder Cowan.
The Cowan match became another marathon.
Reilly and Cowan battled through 18 holes before Reilly ultimately prevailed on the 20th hole, overcoming the pressure of facing one of the top amateur golfers in the country. Cowan was ranked No. 8 in the world amateur rankings and had shared low-amateur honors at the 2026 U.S. Open.
Rather than showing signs of fatigue, Reilly responded with his most convincing performance yet against Lugiano.
Auburn Continues to Shine on National Stage
Reilly’s breakthrough is another significant moment for Auburn men’s golf.
He becomes Auburn’s first U.S. Amateur semifinalist since J.M. Butler reached the final four in 2023.
The achievement also comes only weeks after Reilly played a critical role in Auburn’s NCAA championship triumph. He delivered the clinching point in the Tigers’ national championship victory, helping Auburn secure its second NCAA men’s golf title in three years.
That combination of collegiate success and individual achievement has quickly made Reilly one of the most intriguing young golfers in the Auburn program.
Reilly’s Mindset Has Been Key
Despite the growing attention surrounding his run, Reilly has remained focused on taking the tournament one match at a time.
Following Friday’s victory, he emphasized how important it was to avoid looking too far ahead and simply continue earning another tee time.
That mentality appears to have served him well. He has already survived multiple difficult matches, including two that went beyond the regulation 18 holes, before cruising through the quarterfinals.
Against Lugiano, Reilly said he played extremely well and was particularly pleased that he didn’t have to deal with another dramatic finish on the final holes.
Stanford’s Jay Leng Jr. Awaits
Reilly’s next challenge will be Stanford junior Jay Leng Jr., who also produced a dominant quarterfinal performance.
Leng defeated Florida senior Jack Turner 6&5, setting up an intriguing semifinal between two accomplished amateur golfers. Leng also enters the matchup with considerable momentum after winning the Western Amateur earlier this summer.
The semifinal is scheduled for Saturday, with the winner advancing to the U.S. Amateur championship match.
Major Opportunities Await the Winner
The stakes are enormous.
The winner of the U.S. Amateur receives an exemption into the U.S. Open, as well as an opportunity to play in the Masters and Open Championship while remaining an amateur. The champion also receives additional amateur-golf benefits and a major boost in worldwide recognition.
For Reilly, that means a deep run could dramatically elevate his profile beyond college golf.
He has already demonstrated that he can perform under pressure on the biggest collegiate stage. Now he is four victories away from adding one of amateur golf’s most prestigious championships to his résumé.
For Auburn, meanwhile, Reilly’s emergence provides another reason for optimism. The Tigers already captured a national championship this year, and their rising sophomore is now positioning himself for an opportunity to compete for an individual national amateur title.
Reilly’s remarkable U.S. Amateur run continues Saturday, with a championship-match berth now within reach.
