The Auburn Tigers are heading into the 2026 college football season with a schedule that could quickly put first-year head coach Alex Golesh and his team under the spotlight. With the release of the AP preseason Top 25, Auburn now officially knows it will face five nationally ranked opponents during the regular season.
Although Auburn itself did not crack the preseason Top 25, the Tigers received three votes, suggesting that some voters believe the program could emerge as a contender if it performs well against its demanding schedule.

The five ranked opponents Auburn will face are Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama, giving the Tigers multiple opportunities to make a statement during Golesh’s first season.
Georgia Presents Early Test
Auburn’s highest-ranked opponent is Georgia, which begins the season at No. 3 in the AP poll.
The Tigers will travel to Athens on October 17 for another chapter of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. The matchup will be particularly significant because Auburn has struggled at Georgia for years, with its last victory in Athens coming in 2005.
For Golesh, ending that long drought would immediately establish the new Auburn era with one of the biggest wins possible.
Tennessee Also Ranked in Top 20
Before the Georgia matchup, Auburn will face another ranked SEC opponent when No. 20 Tennessee hosts the Tigers on October 3.
The matchup marks Auburn’s first trip to Tennessee for a game against the Volunteers since 2013, adding another difficult road environment to an already challenging schedule.
A victory over a ranked Tennessee team could provide Auburn with valuable momentum heading into the heart of SEC play.
LSU Returns to Jordan-Hare
Auburn will also welcome No. 11 LSU to Jordan-Hare Stadium on October 24.
The Tigers from Baton Rouge will be led by head coach Lane Kiffin, and Auburn will be facing LSU for the first time in two seasons.
The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. kickoff, giving Auburn an early opportunity to make the most of its home-field advantage against a team ranked among the nation’s best.
Ole Miss Brings Another Major Challenge
Just one week after the LSU game, Auburn faces another ranked SEC opponent.
The Tigers will travel to Oxford on October 31 to take on No. 9 Ole Miss.
The Rebels enter the season with significant expectations under new head coach Pete Golding, while quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is expected to play a major role in the team’s offensive plans.
Auburn’s trip to Oxford could become one of the most demanding games on the schedule, particularly because it comes immediately after the LSU matchup.
Iron Bowl Could Decide the Season
Auburn’s final ranked opponent of the regular season will be No. 13 Alabama in the Iron Bowl on November 28.
The Crimson Tide will host Auburn in Tuscaloosa, creating another difficult road assignment for Golesh’s team.
Auburn has not won an Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa since 2010, while its most recent victory over Alabama came in 2019. Ending either streak would give Golesh an enormous signature victory during his first year at Auburn.
Auburn’s Ranked Schedule
The five ranked teams Auburn will face are:
- No. 3 Georgia — October 17
- No. 9 Ole Miss — October 31
- No. 11 LSU — October 24
- No. 13 Alabama — November 28
- No. 20 Tennessee — October 3
The schedule gives Auburn very little room for error. Four of the five ranked opponents are currently positioned inside the AP’s top 13, meaning Auburn will have to perform at a high level against some of the country’s strongest programs.
Several other SEC teams also appeared in the preseason rankings but are not on Auburn’s 2026 schedule. Texas is No. 5, Texas A&M No. 8, Oklahoma No. 10 and Missouri No. 25.
At the top of the poll, Ohio State was ranked No. 1, followed by Oregon at No. 2 and Georgia at No. 3.
A Major Opportunity for Golesh
The demanding schedule could ultimately become an opportunity rather than simply a challenge.
Auburn enters the season outside the Top 25, but strong performances against ranked opponents could quickly change that. A victory over Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee or Alabama would give the Tigers a major boost in the national rankings and potentially reshape expectations for Golesh’s first season.
With five preseason-ranked opponents on the schedule, Auburn’s path to relevance is clear: the Tigers will have multiple chances to prove they belong among the nation’s best.
For Golesh and Auburn, the message from the preseason rankings is simple the road to a breakout season will run directly through some of college football’s biggest names.
