The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks of the MLB season Sunday, overcoming a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 at Citizens Bank Park.
For much of the afternoon, Philadelphia appeared headed toward its first loss in nine games. The Cardinals controlled the game from the opening innings, while the Phillies’ offense struggled to generate any meaningful production. But with the team down to its final out, Philadelphia suddenly produced an extraordinary six-run rally that completely flipped the game.
The comeback was made even more improbable by the situation facing the Phillies late in the ninth. According to ESPN Analytics, with two outs and Philadelphia still trailing, the Phillies had only a 0.4% chance of winning. Somehow, they overcame those nearly impossible odds and walked away with another victory.
The Cardinals carried a 4-0 lead into the ninth inning and appeared to have the game firmly under control. Their pitching staff had kept Philadelphia scoreless through the first eight frames, and the Phillies had struggled to consistently put runners in scoring position.
Then Bryce Harper stepped to the plate and immediately gave the home team a reason to believe.
Harper opened the ninth with a double, putting a runner in scoring position and giving Philadelphia its first major opportunity of the inning. After two outs, the Phillies were seemingly down to their final chance.
Instead of giving up, they kept the inning alive.
J.T. Realmuto delivered a crucial single, and Justin Crawford followed by drawing a walk to load the bases. Suddenly, the Phillies had the tying run at the plate and the Citizens Bank Park crowd was fully engaged.
Edmundo Sosa then delivered the biggest hit of the rally.
Sosa drove a three-run double down the line, clearing the bases and cutting the Cardinals’ lead to 4-3. In the blink of an eye, Philadelphia had gone from being one out away from defeat to being within a single run of tying the game.
The pressure then shifted entirely onto St. Louis.
Bryan De La Cruz came through with another clutch hit, sending an RBI single through the left side to bring Sosa home and tie the game at 4-4. What had looked like a comfortable Cardinals victory had suddenly become a dramatic battle with the Phillies holding all of the momentum.
That brought Kyle Schwarber to the plate.
With the game tied and the crowd roaring, Schwarber delivered the perfect ending. The Phillies’ designated hitter crushed a two-run walk-off home run, completing the six-run ninth inning and sending Philadelphia to its ninth consecutive victory.
The blast sparked a massive celebration around home plate as Schwarber was mobbed by his teammates. It was the kind of dramatic finish that can become one of the defining moments of a team’s season.
Sunday’s victory also completed a three-game sweep of the Cardinals and continued Philadelphia’s impressive surge. The Phillies had already taken the first two games of the series, winning Friday’s contest 7-6 in extra innings before dominating Saturday’s matchup 12-3.
But the final game was easily the most dramatic of the series.
Philadelphia’s ability to repeatedly find ways to win has become one of the defining characteristics of its current run. Rather than allowing a poor offensive performance through eight innings to determine the outcome, the Phillies remained aggressive and took advantage when the Cardinals finally showed signs of vulnerability.
The comeback was especially impressive because Philadelphia had almost no margin for error. With two outs in the ninth, one more routine defensive play would have ended the game and given St. Louis the win.
Instead, the Phillies produced hit after hit, erased a four-run deficit and finished the afternoon with six runs in one of the most explosive innings imaginable.
The victory also provides another indication of how dangerous Philadelphia can be when its offense gets rolling. A team does not normally recover from a four-run deficit in the final inning, particularly when it has been shut out for the first eight. The Phillies not only recovered but completed the comeback in walk-off fashion.
For the Cardinals, the loss was particularly painful because they had controlled nearly the entire game. St. Louis appeared poised to avoid a sweep and end Philadelphia’s winning streak, only to watch a four-run lead disappear in the final three outs.
For Philadelphia, however, the message is clear: this team is finding ways to win even when victory appears virtually impossible.
The Phillies are no longer simply putting together a winning streak they are building momentum through increasingly dramatic victories. After Sunday’s unbelievable comeback, Philadelphia has now won nine straight games, swept St. Louis and added another unforgettable chapter to what has become an increasingly dangerous run.
If the Phillies continue finding ways to escape games like this, the rest of the National League has plenty of reason to be concerned.
