The St. Louis Cardinals received an unwelcome scare Wednesday when promising rookie slugger Joshua Baez was forced to leave their matchup against the San Francisco Giants because of discomfort on his left side. The Cardinals are now waiting for further evaluation to determine whether the issue is simply tightness or something that could keep the young outfielder out of the lineup for an extended period.
Baez reportedly experienced discomfort around his oblique area before being removed from the game as a precaution. Manager Oli Marmol addressed the situation afterward, indicating that the team would gather more information before making any decision about Baez’s availability. For a Cardinals club attempting to evaluate its young core while also navigating the final stretch of the season, the timing of the injury adds another layer of concern.
The Cardinals have every reason to be careful with Baez. The 23-year-old has quickly become one of the most intriguing young hitters on the roster since making his major-league debut on August 15. His arrival immediately created headlines when he homered in each of his first three big-league at-bats, becoming the first player in MLB history to accomplish that remarkable feat. Since then, he has continued to show why St. Louis views him as a potentially important part of its future.
Through his first 29 major-league games, Baez has recorded seven home runs, 18 RBIs and a .788 OPS over 100 at-bats. Those numbers are particularly notable considering how little time he has spent in the majors. Rather than looking overwhelmed by the jump from Triple-A, Baez has demonstrated the type of power that could eventually make him a regular presence in the middle of the Cardinals’ lineup.
Cardinals Await More Information
The biggest question surrounding Baez now is the severity of the side discomfort. An oblique-related issue can range from relatively minor tightness to a strain capable of sidelining a hitter for weeks. Because hitting requires significant rotational movement through the core, teams typically exercise considerable caution when an oblique problem is involved.
The Cardinals are therefore unlikely to rush Baez back before they have a clearer understanding of what happened. Additional examination and imaging should provide a better indication of whether the rookie simply needs a few days of rest or whether an injured-list stint could become necessary.
If the issue turns out to be a strain, Baez could potentially land on the 10-day injured list. Such a move would give St. Louis time to allow the injury to settle without forcing the young slugger to continue playing through discomfort.
An extended absence would also create an opportunity for other players to take on additional outfield responsibilities. Alec Burleson could see more playing time if Baez is unavailable, while Marmol would have to make adjustments to his lineup and defensive alignment.
For the Cardinals, however, the bigger consideration is not simply how the injury affects the remaining games of the current season. Baez’s development is becoming increasingly important to the organization’s long-term plans, making his health a significant priority.
Baez Has Quickly Become a Major Part of the Cardinals’ Future
Baez did not arrive in St. Louis without a track record. Before his promotion, he was producing enormous power numbers at Triple-A Memphis, where he launched 34 home runs in 103 games during the 2026 season.
That performance helped force the Cardinals’ hand and ultimately earned Baez his opportunity in the majors. Once he arrived, he immediately showed that his power could translate against major-league pitching.
His first few weeks in St. Louis have given the organization plenty to be excited about. The combination of his raw power, offensive upside and ability to make an immediate impact has placed him firmly among the young players Cardinals fans will be watching closely as the organization looks toward 2027.
President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom’s decision to promote Baez has already provided the club with valuable information about what the young outfielder could become. While his small sample size means there is still plenty of development ahead, the early results have strengthened the argument for giving him a significant role moving forward.
That makes Wednesday’s injury particularly frustrating. Baez had been building momentum at the major-league level, and the Cardinals would rather see him finish the season healthy than risk a relatively manageable problem becoming something much more serious.
Health Takes Priority as 2027 Approaches
The Cardinals’ medical staff will likely take a conservative approach with Baez, particularly because side and oblique injuries can be difficult for hitters to manage. Even when a player feels better, returning too quickly can potentially aggravate the problem because of the stress placed on the core during swings and throws.
St. Louis therefore has little incentive to gamble with Baez’s health. The organization has already seen enough from the rookie to understand his potential, and preserving that development is more important than squeezing additional games out of him in September.
If the tests come back clean and the discomfort proves minor, Baez could potentially return to the lineup relatively quickly. If an actual strain is diagnosed, however, the Cardinals may choose to shut him down and focus on getting him fully healthy for the offseason.
Either way, Wednesday’s development is something the organization will monitor closely. Baez has gone from highly regarded minor-league slugger to one of the Cardinals’ most talked-about young players in a matter of weeks. His historic debut and impressive power production have already changed the conversation around his place in the organization.
Now, the Cardinals are waiting for the medical update that will determine whether this was simply a precautionary exit or the beginning of an absence that could interrupt the most exciting stretch of Baez’s young career.
