Alex Golesh finally had a reason to celebrate in conference play.
After a painful SEC-opening loss to Florida left Auburn searching for answers, the Tigers responded Saturday with a hard-fought 21-15 victory over Vanderbilt, giving Golesh his first SEC win as Auburn’s head coach and providing the program with an important confidence boost.
The victory was not necessarily the dominant performance Auburn fans may have hoped for, but the result mattered significantly. Following the Tigers’ 44-39 loss to Florida the previous week, Golesh had openly expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance and delivered an emotional message promising that the program would correct its problems.

Tennessee will also enter the matchup looking to respond after suffering a narrow 20-17 defeat to No. 1 Texas.
That means both programs will have something to prove when they meet in Knoxville.
For Auburn, the game will provide a much stronger indication of whether the Vanderbilt victory represents the beginning of genuine improvement or simply a response to one difficult week.
The Tigers now have an SEC win under their belt, but the challenge of winning away from home will add another layer of difficulty.
Golesh’s message is now being tested
