The St. Louis Cardinals made trades the centerpiece of their offseason strategy, and it may take a few years to fully judge how those moves shape their rebuilding efforts.
One of their biggest decisions was sending Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox. While the deal removed a powerful veteran bat from the lineup, it brought back three promising pitchers who could play key roles in the franchise’s future.
Among them, Hunter Dobbins brings major league experience, and Blake Aita offers intriguing upside. However, the spotlight has been on 19-year-old right-hander Yhoiker Fajardo, widely viewed as the centerpiece of the trade.
Fajardo recently earned high praise from Cardinals legend Jason Isringhausen, who managed a group of top prospects during a Spring Breakout exhibition. He highlighted Fajardo’s maturity and poise, noting that the young pitcher performs like a seasoned veteran.
Isringhausen also pointed to the team’s rise in farm system rankings as a sign the trade could pay off, saying the incoming talent has significantly boosted organizational depth. He described Fajardo as especially polished for his age, reinforcing optimism about his development.
The young pitcher posted a strong 2.25 ERA over 72 innings last season in the Red Sox system, with solid strikeout numbers and good control. While his fastball doesn’t yet feature elite movement and typically sits in the low-to-mid 90s, his overall performance has been encouraging.
With a critical year ahead in his development, Fajardo’s trajectory will be closely watched but early reviews, especially from a franchise icon, suggest the Cardinals may have made a savvy long-term move.
