Just In: Auburn’s NIT Run Giving Young Tigers Crucial Experience and Momentum

Missing out on the NCAA Tournament was a tough pill to swallow for the Auburn Tigers, but their participation in the National Invitation Tournament is quickly turning into a meaningful opportunity especially for the program’s younger core.

After narrowly falling short of March Madness and being named the first team left out, Auburn entered the NIT as the No. 1 overall seed. So far, they’ve made the most of it, defending their home court with back-to-back wins. Their latest victory, a 91–85 win over the Seattle Redhawks, highlighted just how impactful their underclassmen can be when given extended minutes in high-pressure situations.

Head coach Steven Pearl emphasized that these extra postseason games are more than just consolation—they’re a developmental springboard. In his first season leading the program, Pearl is using this stretch to evaluate his roster, build chemistry, and accelerate the growth of players who will be central to Auburn’s future.

Chaney Johnson (“KO”) continued his steady play, while Tahaad Pettiford (Magwood) managed the game well, contributing assists without turnovers against a disciplined defense. Freshman guard Sahvir Wheeler (SWA) also made the most of his minutes, showing flashes of his potential.

The standout performance, however, came from sophomore Elyjah Freeman. He caught fire in the second half, knocking down four three-pointers and finishing with seven rebounds and two blocks. His aggressive approach—both from beyond the arc and attacking the rim proved to be a difference-maker.

Pearl noted that Freeman was specifically encouraged to exploit defensive gaps, particularly against a rim-protecting presence that wasn’t stepping out to guard the perimeter. Freeman responded exactly as hoped, stretching the defense and capitalizing on open looks while also contributing on the glass and defensively.

Beyond individual performances, this NIT run is giving Auburn something invaluable: live-game reps in a postseason environment. For a young roster, these moments can accelerate development in ways regular-season games often can’t. Players are gaining confidence, learning how to execute under pressure, and beginning to define their roles heading into next season.

While the disappointment of missing the NCAA Tournament still lingers, Auburn is turning this experience into a positive. If these
