New K-State men’s basketball coach Casey Alexander is beginning to shape his first roster in Manhattan by connecting with returning players and potential transfers from Belmont.
MANHATTAN — Kansas State continues to add talent with Belmont ties. Jaylen Alexander, a 6-foot-2 guard from Oxford, Alabama, has committed to the Wildcats for next season, strengthening the growing connection between the two programs under their new head coach.
Although he shares a last name with Casey Alexander, the two are not related. Jaylen had initially signed with Belmont after posting 18.8 points and 6.6 assists per game as a high school junior. However, he reopened his recruitment when Alexander left Belmont for Kansas State.
He revealed his decision on social media, writing: “Plans change, goals don’t.”
When Jaylen first signed with Belmont, Alexander described him as a skilled and impactful point guard with leadership qualities and the ability to influence both offense and defense.
His addition means Kansas State will have two former Belmont recruits in Alexander’s first season. Devin Hutcherson, a 6-foot-4 small forward from Atlanta, also committed to the Wildcats. The three-star prospect previously received scholarship offers from Georgia Tech and Ole Miss.
While Kansas State hasn’t prioritized high school recruiting in recent years, that approach may be shifting under Alexander’s leadership.
It’s still unclear what the full roster will look like next season, especially with the transfer portal opening on April 7. However, several of Alexander’s former Belmont players including Tyler Lundblade, Sam Orme, Brigham Rogers, and Drew Scharnowski have entered the portal and could potentially reunite with him at Kansas State.
