Milwaukee currently has only two catchers—William Contreras and Jeferson Quero on their 40-man roster, with Darrien Miller as their sole non-roster invitee for spring training.
Though teams sometimes operate with just two catchers during the season, many clubs opt for the safer route of keeping three on the roster to protect against injuries and provide depth.
According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the Brewers have shown interest in free agent Reese McGuire, who will turn 31 soon. The veteran backstop enjoyed perhaps his strongest offensive campaign in 2025 while playing for Craig Counsell’s Cubs.
Throughout his career, McGuire has been a reliable defensive option coming off the bench, with his busiest season coming in 2022 when he appeared in 89 games split between the White Sox and Red Sox.
His Cubs tenure last season was limited to 44 appearances, but he delivered a career-best nine home runs. Defensively, he contributed 2.6 framing runs and caught eight of 31 attempted base stealers.
Since McGuire ended 2025 on Chicago’s 40-man roster, any minor league contract he signs will include opt-out provisions. While this doesn’t ensure a major league deal, it’s a factor potential suitors like Milwaukee must weigh.
