The St. Louis Cardinals may be in the middle of a rebuild, but there’s still plenty for fans to feel optimistic about especially when it comes to the organization’s rising young talent.
While expectations for a World Series run are modest this season, excitement is building around a new wave of players emerging from the farm system. Following several offseason trades, opportunities have opened up for prospects like Nolan Gorman, Jordan Walker, and most notably JJ Wetherholt to establish themselves at the major league level.
Among that group, Wetherholt is quickly separating himself. Widely regarded as the top prospect in the Cardinals’ system, he has already begun to show why there’s so much buzz surrounding him. Analysts, including FOX Sports’ Rowan Kavner, have identified him as a leading candidate to be the team’s breakout player this year—an expectation fueled by both his recent performance and long-standing hype.
Drafted No. 7 overall in 2024, Wetherholt impressed in the minors with a .306/.421/.510 slash line, along with 17 home runs and 23 stolen bases across Double-A and Triple-A. His disciplined approach at the plate and advanced hitting ability have helped him transition smoothly toward the big leagues, even as a young player.
He’s already making an immediate impact. Wetherholt launched a home run in his MLB debut and followed it up with a walk-off hit in his second game an early glimpse of his potential to deliver in key moments.
Known for his strong contact skills and plate discipline, Wetherholt may not rely solely on power, but he still projects as a consistent 20–25 home run hitter. Combined with his overall offensive instincts and composure, he brings the kind of well-rounded profile teams look for in a cornerstone player.
