JUST IN: Cubs Down to Two Candidates for Final Bullpen Spot

The Chicago Cubs are closing in on their Opening Day roster, with just one key decision left to make in the bullpen.

With only a couple of spring games remaining before their opener against the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field, most of the roster has already been finalized. Recent moves including sending Ethan Roberts and Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A have narrowed the competition to two pitchers: Ben Brown and Javier Assad.

With the starting rotation already set, the Cubs must decide which of the two will fill the final bullpen role. Both pitchers have experience in flexible “swingman” duties, but only one spot is available.

Assad has shown more consistency overall, giving him a higher floor. Brown, however, brings greater upside and has been particularly impressive this spring. He’s posted strong numbers, helped by the addition of a new sinker that has made him more effective across multiple outings. Assad has also performed well, though in fewer appearances.

One factor that could ultimately decide the competition is roster flexibility. Assad still has multiple minor league options remaining, while Brown has fewer, making it more practical for Chicago to keep Brown on the major league roster and send Assad to the minors if needed.

Because of that, Brown appears to have the edge for the final bullpen spot. The Cubs have already started transitioning him into a relief role, suggesting they’re preparing to give him the first opportunity.

Still, the margin for error will be slim. Brown struggled last season and will need to prove that his spring improvements carry over into meaningful games. If he falters, the Cubs could quickly turn to Assad as an alternative.

As things stand, it looks like Brown is set to get his chance but it’s a pivotal moment that could define his role moving forward.
