A former Philadelphia Phillies player is still linked to one of baseball’s worst contracts, even after the team moved on from him.
Although the Phillies have assembled one of the strongest rosters in recent years, not every financial move has paid off. Some costly decisions are still affecting the team even after certain players have departed.
According to Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report, former Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos remains tied to the franchise’s worst contract despite no longer being part of the team. Castellanos originally signed a major deal with Philadelphia, but his stint with the club ended when he was released. Even so, the financial burden of that contract continues to affect the organization.
Kelly explained that the only financial relief for Philadelphia comes from the league-minimum salary Castellanos now earns with the San Diego Padres, which slightly offsets what the Phillies still owe him.
While Castellanos’ contract remains the most problematic, Kelly also noted that other deals on the roster could raise concerns. One example is veteran pitcher Aaron Nola, a long-time cornerstone of the team who struggled last season, posting a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts. Nola is currently in the third year of a seven-year, $172 million contract, raising questions about whether last year was simply a slump or a sign of decline.
Another contract mentioned was that of Taijuan Walker, whose four-year, $72 million deal has not produced the results the Phillies expected, with the pitcher now entering the final year of the agreement.
Despite these concerns, Castellanos’ contract still stands out as the most disappointing. Nevertheless, the Phillies’ willingness to invest heavily in talent has helped keep the team competitive, giving fans reason to remain optimistic.
