SHOCKING NEWS: Jorge Julio’s Uneven Progress Leads to Phillies Roster Decision

The Philadelphia Phillies have parted ways with outfielder Jorge Julio following two largely underwhelming seasons in the minor leagues. According to MiLB.com transaction records, the team released Julio on Saturday after three years at the rookie-ball level.

Julio was signed by the Phillies during the opening day of the 2023 international signing period as a 16-year-old prospect from Venezuela. He began his professional career in the Dominican Summer League but struggled in limited action, appearing in 16 games and posting a .171/.383/.257 slash line. While he showed some plate discipline with 11 walks, he recorded only six hits, drove in three runs, and committed two defensive errors.

The following year, Julio remained in the Dominican Summer League and showed noticeable progress. Over 42 games in 2024, he hit .276/.392/.398 with 11 extra-base hits and a .790 OPS. He also drew 21 walks third most on the team and struck out just 19 times, suggesting improved approach and consistency.

However, his development stalled in 2025 after being promoted to the Florida Complex League. In 26 games, Julio’s performance declined, as he posted a .598 OPS and walked only six times. His strikeout rate increased, his ability to draw walks diminished, and he committed two more errors while playing right field.

Despite being just 19 years old, Julio may still attract interest from another organization willing to invest in his potential as a reliable outfielder. Ultimately, though, the Phillies decided to move on, concluding that his brief improvement was outweighed by struggles in two of his three seasons.
