The New York Mets continue to stay active this offseason, even after making splashy additions. Following the high-profile acquisitions of Bo Bichette and Luis Robert Jr. on costly short-term deals, the Mets are now turning their attention to bullpen depth.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Mets are set to sign veteran reliever Luis García formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million. The deal reportedly includes $1.25 million in performance-based incentives.
While New York has spent heavily on marquee names, moves like this reflect a more measured approach, as low-cost veteran signings can still provide meaningful contributions.
García brings extensive experience, having spent 13 seasons in the majors with eight different teams. He began his career with the Phillies, where he pitched six seasons and recorded a 4.12 ERA over 251 appearances. In 2025, he split time between the Dodgers, Washington Nationals, and Los Angeles Angels, combining for a 3.42 ERA.
Set to turn 39 on January 30, García is among the oldest players the Mets are adding this offseason. If he makes the roster, the Mets would become his ninth MLB team, and he could be entering his 14th season as a reliable bullpen option for a playoff-contending club.
Though his role is not guaranteed, García offers valuable depth and postseason experience, highlighted by a 1.42 ERA across 6.1 playoff innings during his career.
