Breaking: Mets Decide to Send Top Prospect Jonah Tong to Triple-A

The New York Mets have made a roster decision regarding one of their top young arms, sending right-hander Jonah Tong the organization’s No. 3-ranked prospect to Triple-A Syracuse after his two spring training appearances. Tong threw 5⅓ innings, recorded five strikeouts, and allowed four earned runs during those outings.

The team believes the young pitcher still needs time to refine his game, particularly his secondary pitches. Despite the move, Tong remains part of the Mets’ long-term plans. Given the challenges of a full 162-game season and the likelihood of injuries, he is expected to receive opportunities to pitch for the major league club later in the year.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza explained that the organization wants Tong to keep developing in the minors while working on specific aspects of his pitching. Mendoza also emphasized that Tong will eventually contribute at the major league level and remains an important piece of the team’s future.

Tong will join outfielder Nick Morabito, who was recently sent down after being placed on the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. Right-handers Dylan Ross and Jonathan Pintaro are also in the group, while pitcher Jack Wenninger has been reassigned to minor league camp.

Strong Spring for Carson Benge

Meanwhile, top position prospect Carson Benge is making a strong impression during spring training. The 23-year-old is competing for the Mets’ right-field job and has posted an impressive .391/.440/.478 slash line with a .918 OPS across 23 at-bats in Grapefruit League play.

Mendoza praised Benge’s approach at the plate, saying he wants the young outfielder to simply keep playing his natural game and continue producing solid at-bats. The manager highlighted Benge’s ability to use the entire field and consistently put the ball in play.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns also spoke highly of Benge, describing him as a tough hitter to retire who has shown solid defense in right field. Stearns noted that the prospect has performed exactly as expected so far, but the team will face a difficult roster decision as spring training nears its conclusion.

Injury Updates

Star shortstop Francisco Lindor is continuing to recover well from hamate surgery and has shown steady progress over the past few weeks. He recently returned to fielding ground balls in practice, suggesting he could be ready for Opening Day.

Mendoza also mentioned that athlete is expected to make his first appearance in Grapefruit League action on Thursday.
