BREAKING NEWS: Mets Predicted to Reunite With $67M All-Star to Bolster Freddy Peralta Rotation

The New York Mets made a major statement by acquiring Freddy Peralta, securing a frontline starter to anchor their rotation. Even so, questions remain about the overall depth of their pitching staff an issue that could prompt action by the 2026 trade deadline.

One potential answer could come from a familiar source. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly projects that the Mets may pursue a midseason trade to bring back two-time All-Star Luis Severino, who is currently on a $67 million contract. Although Severino’s overall numbers with the Athletics were underwhelming, his performance away from their temporary home ballpark told a very different story.

Kelly suggests that Severino’s discomfort pitching at Sutter Health Park could play a role in the A’s willingness to move him. If Severino rebounds in 2026, Oakland may opt to trade him rather than risk losing him in free agency especially if the team lacks the pitching depth to seriously contend. Given Severino’s past success with both the Yankees and Mets, Kelly believes New York’s teams would be logical landing spots, with the Mets emerging as early favorites to acquire him at the deadline.

During the most recent season, Severino finished with an 8–11 record, a 4.54 ERA, 124 strikeouts, and a 1.303 WHIP across 162 innings. Notably, when pitching outside of the A’s home park, he was far more effective, posting a 6–2 record and a 3.01 ERA.

Considering those splits, Severino could be an ideal fit in the middle of the Mets’ rotation. His presence would add much-needed depth and potentially elevate the staff into one of the more formidable units in the league. Among New York’s two franchises, the Mets appear to have the greater need, making a reunion at the trade deadline a move worth serious consideration.
