News Report: Phillies’ Sluggish Start Fuels Fan Concerns After Quiet Opening Series

The Philadelphia Phillies gave fans an early scare with a lackluster offensive showing in their opening series, struggling to generate hits and momentum at the plate.

On Saturday, the team went down 14 times before recording their first hit, and on Sunday it took 15 outs before Justin Crawford finally broke the drought with a weak infield hit in the sixth inning. Across the weekend, the offense looked largely lifeless, aside from a brief spark in Saturday’s ninth inning that was aided by a defensive miscue.

Even when starting pitchers like Jesús Luzardo and Aaron Nola surrendered a few home runs, the bigger issue remained clear  the Phillies simply can’t win consistently if the bats stay silent for long stretches.

Through their first turns in the lineup during the two losses, the Phillies went hitless in 17 at-bats, striking out seven times with just one walk from J.T. Realmuto. By the time they threatened offensively on Sunday, they were already trailing by six runs.

Texas’ left-handed starters controlled both games, with Jacob Latz setting the tone Saturday and Mackenzie Gore continuing his dominance over Philadelphia on Sunday. Gore has now delivered five straight strong outings against the Phillies, posting a 2.15 ERA with 42 strikeouts in just over 29 innings.

The Phillies had their best chance to rally in the sixth inning Sunday when they loaded the bases with no outs. With Bryce Harper stepping up and a chance to ignite a comeback, the moment fell flat. Harper struck out after a well-executed sequence from Gore, halting what could have been a turning point.

Philadelphia managed just two runs in that inning, thanks to a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly, but it wasn’t nearly enough given the opportunity. A clutch extra-base hit in that spot could have energized both the team and the crowd, but it never came.

Offensively, only a few players stood out. Brandon Marsh delivered a key two-run single on Saturday, while Crawford showed promise from the bottom of the order. Outside of Opening Day power from Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm, the lineup has struggled to  consistently create scoring chances.

While it’s far too early to draw major conclusions about the 2026 season, the slow start reflects a familiar concern among fans   inconsistent offense.

The Phillies will look to rebound in their next series against the Washington Nationals, where they face left-hander Foster Griffin, who is making his first MLB appearance since 2022. With the Nationals expected to endure a tough season, this presents a prime opportunity for Philadelphia to reset and regain confidence at the plate.

After such a quiet opening series, anything less than a strong showing would only deepen early-season worries.
