Bologna sporting director Marco Di Vaio has spoken out about the future of Colombian defender Jhon Lucumí, amid growing interest from Sunderland ahead of the January transfer window. The Serie A club’s chief made it clear that while the player remains a key part of their defensive setup, several English clubs — including Sunderland — have shown serious intent in recent weeks. Di Vaio confirmed that inquiries have been received but stated that Bologna would only consider an offer that matches their valuation, believed to be around £20 million.
Lucumí, 26, has been one of Bologna’s standout performers since joining from Genk in 2022, and his consistency at the back has earned him attention from multiple European sides. Sunderland’s recruitment team reportedly views him as a potential defensive leader who could strengthen their backline as they aim to secure a top-half finish in the Premier League this season. However, Bologna’s stance remains firm — they are not under pressure to sell midseason, especially with the club pushing for European qualification.
Di Vaio concluded by saying that any decision on Lucumí’s future will depend on both the player’s wishes and the club’s broader sporting goals. For now, Bologna expect him to remain part of Thiago Motta’s plans, though the door is not completely closed to a transfer if the right proposal arrives. Sunderland are said to be monitoring the situation closely and could return with an improved offer once the winter window officially opens.
