After six matches of the Premier League season, a supercomputer has released its projection for where Sunderland will rank by the end of the campaign and the forecast has understandably stunned many.

Thus far, Sunderland have started their top‑flight return strongly, sitting in the upper half of the table ahead of their sixth fixture. They’ve already surpassed some of their promoted rivals such as Leeds United and Burnley, having recorded two wins, two draws, and just one defeat. This early promise has sparked speculation over whether they might avoid a relegation battle altogether.

Nevertheless, the supercomputer’s analysis delivers a sobering forecast. According to Opta’s computerized simulations, Sunderland are predicted to finish in 17th place, narrowly avoiding the drop. Their expected points total is pegged at around 41, putting them just four points clear of relegation. Crucially, the model estimates their chances of going down at roughly 30 percent suggesting that while survival is possible, it’s by no means guaranteed.

Interestingly, earlier projections made before the season began were even harsher. One prediction placed Sunderland at the very bottom, on 35 points, and gave them a more than 50% probability of relegation. Despite a flurry of summer signings and a bright opening to the season, the computer still sees Sunderland as among the likeliest candidates for the drop.

Of course, these predictions are based on statistical models and assumptions about future performance. The reality on the pitch could play out quite differently especially if Sunderland continue their solid start and find consistency in attack and defense.
