Philadelphia’s offseason has lacked the major external additions many expected following another disappointing postseason exit.
Fans anticipated an aggressive approach after last year’s playoff heartbreak, but the team’s pursuit of former Blue Jays star Bo Bichette ended unsuccessfully when he chose the division rival Mets instead.
Despite that setback, the Phillies may still pursue a significant move. While they successfully retained Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, losing Ranger Suarez to the Red Sox created a notable void in the rotation.

Phillies Potentially Eyeing Major Investment
The team could shift focus toward free agent Framber Valdez, formerly of the Astros, according to MLB insider Jim Bowden, who listed Philadelphia among potential suitors.
Valdez would effectively replace Suarez and strengthen the team’s championship prospects, though the price tag will be substantial.
Spotrac projects his market value at approximately six years and $199.9 million, though Philadelphia might secure him for less.
Dave Dombrowski has historically been willing to spend aggressively, making Phillies involvement with the still-available Valdez quite plausible.
What Valdez Would Provide Philadelphia
The 32-year-old has been among baseball’s most underappreciated starters during his Houston tenure.
In 2025, he posted a 13-11 record across 31 starts with a 3.66 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 2.8 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and 192 innings. The previous year saw him go 15-7 with a 2.91 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 176.1 innings over 28 starts.
His numbers clearly justify Philadelphia’s potential interest as an ideal Suarez replacement, though cost concerns could complicate any deal.
Bowden also mentioned other contenders, noting widespread belief that Baltimore will land Valdez, while identifying Atlanta, Detroit, and San Francisco as additional possibilities.
Whether Philadelphia will actively pursue Valdez remains uncertain. He’d fit well and boost their title chances, but the financial commitment might prove prohibitive.
