Both the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies have experienced relatively quiet offseasons, though opportunities remain for roster improvements through trades or free agency.
MLB analyst Ken Rosenthal discussed a possible transaction between the clubs on “Foul Territory,” highlighting veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos as a trade candidate. Philadelphia’s front office executive has stated clearly that Castellanos won’t be wearing a Phillies uniform when the season begins.

San Diego’s search for affordable right-handed hitting could align with Philadelphia’s desire to move the outfielder, who has been working on his first base skills during training. This positional flexibility addresses another Padres need.
Castellanos’ Recent Performance
The 33-year-old appeared in 147 games last season, compiling 17 homers and 72 runs batted in with a .250/.294/.400 line. While not impressive numbers, they represent serviceable production.
For San Diego, he might serve as a reasonable backup plan if preferred alternatives don’t materialize. Philadelphia would benefit from resolving their stated intention to part ways with the veteran.
Career Overview
Across 13 major league seasons with four organizations, Castellanos has shown significant fluctuation in performance. His strongest campaign occurred in 2021 when he posted 34 home runs, 100 RBI, and a .309/.362/.576 slash line for Cincinnati. Two years ago in Philadelphia, he contributed 29 homers, 106 RBI, and slashed .272/.311/.476.
While capable of substantial offensive contributions, Castellanos carries the risk of extended slumps. Despite this inconsistency, the potential fit between both teams’ needs could facilitate a deal.
