The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly committing long-term to pitcher Jesús Luzardo, agreeing to a five-year, $135 million contract extension that will keep the left-hander in Philadelphia through the 2031 season.
Philadelphia first acquired Luzardo from the Miami Marlins in December 2024, trading two minor-league players for the Peruvian-born starter. After one strong season with the club, the Phillies have now decided to make him a key part of their future rotation.
In 2025, Luzardo posted a 15–7 record with a 3.92 ERA across 32 starts, setting career highs in wins, innings pitched (183.2), and strikeouts (216).
The timing of the deal also reflects changes in the Phillies’ pitching staff. Left-hander Ranger Suárez left in free agency to join the Boston Red Sox, while veteran right-hander Aaron Nola is coming off the most difficult season of his career. Another veteran, Zack Wheeler, is recovering from thoracic outlet surgery and may not return immediately to his previous All-Star form.
With those uncertainties, Luzardo still only 28 years old gives Philadelphia a relatively young cornerstone as the team transitions its pitching rotation to a new generation.
Over his MLB career with the Oakland Athletics, Marlins, and Phillies, Luzardo has compiled a 41–41 record with a 4.19 ERA.
