Breaking: Why Jordan Peterson is Excited to take Charge of Kansas State’s Defense Under Collin Klein, by Kellis Robinett

Jordan Peterson is excited about the opportunity to run Kansas State’s defense under new head coach Collin Klein, a role that brings his career full circle.

Collin Klein - Football Coach - Kansas State University Athletics

Peterson’s coaching journey began as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M, where he experienced a memorable four-overtime loss to Kansas State in 2011. Klein, then the Wildcats’ quarterback, dominated that game with 281 passing yards and five rushing touchdowns. That intense matchup left a lasting impression on Peterson and helped spark his interest in joining K-State years later.

He recalls Kansas State as a team that always delivered physical, hard-fought battles. After finally joining the program, he says he now understands the culture behind that reputation.

Peterson also faced the Wildcats during his time at Kansas from 2020 to 2023, where he coached defensive backs. Although the Jayhawks improved and reached bowl games, they were unable to defeat K-State, with Klein serving as offensive coordinator during that stretch.

Now on the same side, Peterson is enthusiastic about working with Klein and returning to Kansas, a place his family has grown attached to. The move has been met with excitement at home, especially as they embrace supporting the Wildcats.

Peterson and Klein recently worked together at Texas A&M, where they developed strong chemistry and often reflected on their 2011 showdown usually focusing more on their mistakes than their successes. Klein was impressed by Peterson’s defensive work, particularly his ability to develop players and elevate those around him, making him a natural choice for defensive coordinator.

As spring practice begins, Peterson is eager to shape a defense defined by versatility, toughness, and relentless effort. His goal is for opponents to come away remembering how physical and unified the Wildcats play, showcasing confidence and intensity on every snap.
