New Auburn head coach Alex Golesh faces a defining challenge early in his tenure: reversing the Tigers’ recent struggles in the Iron Bowl and restoring balance to one of college sports’ fiercest rivalries.
The annual clash between Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide carries enormous weight, often overshadowing the rest of the season for fans on both sides. However, in recent years, the rivalry has tilted heavily in Alabama’s favor, creating growing frustration within the Auburn community.
On the football field, Alabama has dominated the series, winning six straight Iron Bowls. That streak began under legendary coach Nick Saban and has continued seamlessly into the current era led by Kalen DeBoer, who has already gone undefeated against Auburn. The imbalance isn’t limited to football either. In basketball, Auburn previously surged under Bruce Pearl, but after his departure, Steven Pearl couldn’t maintain that edge, losing both matchups to Alabama’s Nate Oats. Even in baseball, Auburn’s momentum faltered as Alabama captured a key series victory, further emphasizing the Tide’s upper hand across major sports.
Because of that broader dominance, Golesh’s role becomes even more critical. If Auburn is going to reclaim its footing in the rivalry, it will likely start with football the most visible and emotionally charged battleground. Previous head coach Hugh Freeze had success troubling Alabama during his time at Ole Miss, but his Auburn teams never reached the level needed to seriously threaten the Crimson Tide.
Golesh, however, may already have a key advantage that his predecessor lacked: stability and talent at quarterback. With Byrum Brown under center, Auburn appears better positioned offensively than it has been in years. While maintaining consistent quarterback play over the long term remains a challenge, having a capable leader at the position gives the Tigers a solid foundation to build upon in the short term.
Ultimately, Golesh doesn’t need to win every matchup or turn Auburn into an annual College Football Playoff contender immediately. What will define his success is whether he can make the rivalry competitive again closing the gap, challenging Alabama more consistently, and giving Auburn fans reason to believe that the Iron Bowl is once again a true battle rather than a predictable outcome.
