Breaking News: Former Rangers Coach Lands Vegas Gig in Shocking Late-season Shakeup

In a surprising late-season move, the Vegas Golden Knights have hired former New York Rangers coach John Tortorella, replacing Bruce Cassidy with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.

The decision comes as a shock given Vegas entered the year as a strong Stanley Cup contender. Despite sitting third in the Pacific Division, the team has been in a downward spiral, losing three straight games and six of their last seven, with a 4-10-2 record since late February. That slump ultimately prompted general manager Kelly McCrimmon to part ways with Cassidy, the most successful coach in franchise history who led the team to its only Stanley Cup title in 2023.

McCrimmon emphasized the need for a spark as the playoffs approach, turning to Tortorella’s experience and reputation for quickly energizing teams. A Stanley Cup-winning coach, Tortorella brings a long résumé that includes stops with the Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Philadelphia Flyers.

With 770 career wins among the most in NHL history Tortorella is known for his demanding style and ability to produce immediate results. He famously guided the Lightning to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004 and has remained one of the league’s most recognizable coaching figures.

Now taking over a struggling but talented Vegas roster, Tortorella will be tasked with stabilizing the team down the stretch and preparing them for a potential playoff push. His arrival also reunites him with top talent like Jack Eichel, as he looks to chase another championship in a dramatic new chapter of his career.
