These three SEC squads have the pieces in place to emerge as surprise playoff contenders and steer their programs back on track.
The Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, and South Carolina Gamecocks entered 2025 with lofty playoff expectations, each boasting highly regarded quarterbacks, Top 20 rosters, and head coaches aiming to take the next step. Instead, they combined for just 13 wins, leading to coaching changes and major staff shakeups. Now, all three are eyeing a resurgence in 2026.
Auburn Tigers
Despite strong recruiting classes, a talented receiver group, and a solid defense, Auburn underperformed in 2025. The addition of Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold initially sparked optimism, but inconsistency at quarterback and on the sidelines derailed the season. After a disappointing finish, the program turned to former USF head coach Alex Golesh.
Golesh arrives with a reputation for building competitive teams and brings several transfers with him, including dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown, who already knows his system. Auburn also retains defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, which should help stabilize the defense. If the Tigers can start strong early in the season, a significant improvement in the win column is within reach.
South Carolina Gamecocks
Unlike the others, South Carolina stuck with head coach Shane Beamer after a frustrating 2025 campaign. A promising roster led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers and edge rusher Dylan Stewart failed to meet expectations, largely due to offensive struggles.
Beamer responded by hiring offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, whose fast-paced system better suits Sellers’ skill set. With weapons like Nyck Harbor and reinforcements along the offensive line, the Gamecocks could unlock their offensive potential. Defensively, returning talent and key additions give this unit a chance to improve. A strong October stretch could determine whether South Carolina reenters the playoff conversation.
Florida Gators
After a disappointing 4-8 season, Florida moved on from Billy Napier and hired Jon Sumrall to lead the rebuild. Sumrall brings energy and a defensive-minded approach, aiming to revive a program that had gone stale.
With D.J. Lagway transferring out, the Gators will rely on a new-look offense under coordinator Buster Faulkner. A quarterback battle between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones headlines the transition, supported by a deep group of skill players. Defensively, Florida returns key contributors and adds experienced leadership to improve on last year’s struggles.
A tough schedule awaits, but early results could set the tone. If the Gators find consistency, they have the talent to exceed expectations and push toward playoff contention.
While each team faces challenges with new systems and personnel, the foundation for a turnaround is in place. With the right adjustments and early momentum, Auburn, South Carolina, and Florida could all emerge as surprise contenders in the SEC this season.
