Kansas State Wildcats baseball delivered a dominant performance on Saturday night, overpowering the Arizona Wildcats baseball 11–1 in an eight-inning run-rule victory at Hi Corbett Field. The win was fueled by a clutch pinch-hit home run from Nick English and a career-best outing on the mound by Lincoln Sheffield.

Kansas State (25–14, 9–8 Big 12) found itself trailing late before English, coming off the bench in the seventh inning, changed the course of the game with a towering 411-foot three-run homer. His go-ahead blast not only erased a one-run deficit but ignited a decisive offensive surge that carried into the eighth inning.
Sheffield played an equally critical role, delivering one of the most dominant pitching performances of his career. The senior right-hander allowed just one earned run on four hits across a complete eight innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters while issuing no walks. He retired 25 of the 29 hitters he faced, securing his sixth win of the season and anchoring the Wildcats through a tightly contested pitching duel.
Arizona starter Smith Bailey was nearly untouchable early, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out 15 batters—marking the highest strikeout total by an Arizona pitcher in over a decade. However, once he exited, Kansas State capitalized immediately against the bullpen.
After English’s go-ahead homer in the seventh, the Wildcats broke the game wide open in the eighth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs. The rally featured key contributions from multiple players, culminating in a 417-foot grand slam by Dee Kennedy, his 16th home run of the season. The blast not only sealed the run-rule victory but also placed Kennedy among the top single-season home run hitters in program history.
Earlier in the game, both teams were locked in a defensive battle, with Sheffield and Bailey trading dominant innings. Arizona briefly took a 1–0 lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Carson McEntire, but that would be their only run of the night.
Head coach Pete Hughes praised both English’s team-first mentality and Sheffield’s composure under pressure, noting that their performances were pivotal in turning a tight contest into a convincing victory. He also highlighted Kennedy’s all-around impact, pointing to his power at the plate, baserunning ability, and defensive presence.
With the win, Kansas State secured its eighth run-rule victory of the season and clinched a key Big 12 road series, continuing to build momentum as conference play intensifies.
