The Philadelphia Phillies are making a significant roster change as they prepare to welcome back ace pitcher Zack Wheeler, who is set to make his season debut this weekend against the Atlanta Braves. With the team struggling near the bottom of the standings tied with the New York Mets for the worst record in baseball the upcoming series carries added importance for Philadelphia’s hopes of turning its season around.
In a corresponding move, the Phillies have decided to part ways with veteran pitcher Taijuan Walker, releasing him despite the sizable four-year, $72 million contract he signed with the club. The decision reflects both his recent struggles and the urgency for the team to make changes. Walker posted a 9.13 ERA this season, allowing 23 earned runs in just over 22 innings numbers that made him one of the least effective starters in the league.
During his time in Philadelphia, Walker logged over 400 innings across 72 starts, finishing with a 4.90 ERA and nearly 300 strikeouts. However, inconsistency and susceptibility to home runs limited his overall impact. Prior to joining the Phillies, he had a more stable run with the Mets, even earning an All-Star selection in 2021.
With Wheeler returning to anchor the rotation, Walker ultimately became the odd man out. Though he brings 14 years of MLB experience, more than 1,300 innings pitched, and over 1,100 strikeouts in his career, his future is now uncertain. At 33 years old, he may still attract interest from teams willing to take a low-risk chance, likely on a minor league deal, but it remains to be seen whether he will continue pitching or consider stepping away from the game.
